I bought the smiley antenna 155mhz about 6 months ago and have tested it
Repeatedly in the said band....
Let's just say when monitoring my neighboring county and I'm saying 6 miles away ..i get pretty much a very weak signal when compared to my stock antenna ! I have a TRX-1 and a pro 197 and have tried the smiley on both with less than decent results
The site claims up to 9 db gain fully extended ! However i could barely get any reception 10 miles away on vhf hi my stock antenna blew it away on distance !!!
My impression of this antenna is..
Avoid this antenna ! It promises high gain..it looks well built but is a poor performer ! I bought a smiley 460 MHz quite a few years ago and it did very well. But as far as the 155 MHz version it's one to avoid !

Try setting it to 36 inches from the top of the spring/coil (or bottom of the telescoping part) to the end and see if you get better reception.

I have the 2m (146 MHz) version and it seems to receive better when the length is about 1/2 wavelength instead of fully extended.
