Don't know about VA, but NC has a 41,000+ acre wildlands fire going in the swamps of eastern NC, and it's creating a real problem smokewise in the adjoining states. I'm 200 miles west, visibility is 3 miles, and the air smells like somebody peed in the barbecue grill.

SMOKE IS POSSIBLE FROM WILDFIRES TO THE SOUTH...
A SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WIND TODAY MAY BRING SOME SMOKE UP OVER PARTS
OF NORTHEASTERN MARYLAND, DELAWARE AND SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY. THE
SMOKE IS FROM WILDFIRES THAT HAVE BEEN BURNING IN EXTREME
SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA AND EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
The reason the smoke smelled funny was the fire was burning in a marshy area. Apparently there was a lot of pete moss burning which smells like an electrical fire. FYI
