That's the way HF is for the most part. The first skip typically is about 400 to 1200 miles or so. 40 and 80 meters during the day can do what's called NVIS and 50 to 200 miles is typical. Propagation is very interesting to me and that's a big part of why I like messing around with FT8 . Each station that goes on the air and gets received by another station will also have the signal report available.
