Ok,

I know that there is now a "software-driven" ham transceiver. It's quite "pricey" for my blood and with only one watt output, leaves a LOT to be desired, LOL! But, let's ignore the transmitter. I'm wondering what kind of IC circuitry would be involved in building just a receiver. It surely has an antenna connector of some kind and an audio circuit. But, I imagine the "magic" is done in the software as to how it "tunes", de-modulates and processes signals before turning them into audio or a 'visual' format...words or data printed across a screen or to a printer.

Here's my thinking......to be able to construct such a radio (scanner?) that would be able to "monitor" all forms of communications (analog & digital) in ALL "modes" from say 13 khz to 300 ghz! No, I don't want to listen to cell 'phones.

Now, SHOULD this be capable of being done, the software could be configured in such a way that NO form of communication would be safe from reception. If the U.S. Military doesn't already have this capability, they will soon, LOL! If I were capable of building such a receiver, I wouldn't use it for nefarious, ill eagle (that's a sick bird) purposes. I'm just "lazy" and would rather have the radio "scan" a lot of frequencies. looking for "transmissions", rather than having to constantly buy newer scanners, everytime someone comes up with a "wrinkle" to keep me from hearing them, LOL!

I'm sure software could be developed to monitor very wide bands of frequencies in ALL "modes": CW, PSK, AM, FM, SSB and analog or digital. Eventually, someone would write software to "decode" scrambled transmissions as well. ;-), but it wouldn't be me, LOL!

You can bet, if someone were to manufacture these "scanners" the Federal Government would have them in prison within 2 hours, no trial, they just "disappear" to keep from it being spread around, LOL! Terrorist don't have to monitor our radio traffic, they just watch CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC or the Military Channel. :-(

Well anyway, I can certainly "dream" of having such a radio receiver.

Respectfully,
73,

Don/KA5LQJ

old news.

Icom has had a software receiver for a while, windradio sells lots of radio to the government.

Do a search for Software defined radio and see what pops up.

Spend a week or two reading up on Software Defined Radio (SDR), Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Analog to Digital Converters (A/D, AtoD, ADC).

The hard part is ignoring the marketing BS to get to what really can be done in a practical manner.

FM receivers have already been built as single chips. (Maybe other modes, too.)
