I am wondering are there any current software made for programming scanners. Mainly 396/996 that are mac friendly

This really belongs in either the software or Uniden forums; however....

The answer is no, not directly. However, there has been some talk of some of BuTel's software working via Virtual PC (I think that's the package - I'm not a mac person...).

Another possibility - at least for the 396 - is if you have (or can install) the tck/tl interpreter, there is a package called, I think, BCD396 Manager which looks rather interesting. That link is on our 396 wiki page
