Actually it is true.. A Carrington event would be an extremely serious thing. Back in the 1800's the energy imparted to telegraph lines from the solar ejection set fires in telegraph offices. Forget the internet.... I can't imagine what it would do to the modern power grid.

I know it is true, but the Brit papers write up this stuff in a style that outdoes the silly shake-and-bake disaster movies of the past few decades. See #3 on The 12 Biggest Blackouts In History for the Quebec blackout in 1989. Giddyup.

It might not be a bad thing for the planet. Except for the residual effects of chemical and nuke plants melting down from uncontrollable reactions. We would be doomed.
