Churches struck by thieves; sound systems stolen

Two area churches were hit hard over the weekend, when thousands of dollars of sound equipment were stolen from their sanctuaries.
According to West Memphis Police, Asst. Chief Mike Allen, the sound system at the First Baptist Church on Missouri Street was stolen sometime between 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 1:20 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the report, the suspect (s) entered into the building and took a 32 channel sound board valued at $10,000 and an electronic drum set valued at $3,000.
Allen said that according to church officials the last time the property was seen was on Wednesday after regular services.
When officials returned to the church at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, the equipment was gone.
According to a FBC church member, an unknown male came to the daycare portion of the church on Friday afternoon and asked to be allowed to go into the sanctuary area, a portion of the church which is kept locked except during services.
He told the daycare personnel that he was there to check the sound system for the funeral of ASP Corporal Mark Carthron which was set to be held the next day. He was allowed into the sanctuary, however he was not accompanied and left without being noticed by anyone.
Church members believe that the man then loaded the sound equipment up and left. They did not see the theft take place, and do not have a description of the person or the vehicle involved.
Also hit over the weekend was the Marion First Baptist Church on Highway 77.
According to Marion Police Detective Gerald Martin, a Soundcraft sound board and four speakers with a total value of $10,000 were taken.
Martin said that the theft occurred sometime between Wednesday at 9 p.m. and the Sunday morning services.
Anyone with information on the burglaries can call Crittenden County Crimestoppers at (870) 732-4444.
All tips are kept confidential, a reward of up to $1,000 can be paid to anyone with information leading to an arrest in these cases.
