Maybe the characteristics of 800 MHz; I don't have a good grasp of the physics. SB's main transmitter is located on almost the highest point in the county (it's on the same hill, maybe 0.25 mi from the HP), so as long as you're south-facing and up a bit, I would think it is line of sight.
I've received and trunked the system from a roof in Elizabeth. I've received the CC (albeit poorly) from under the NEC near Newark Penn Stn and on the Verrazano; I was told that the tracks and bridge structure like a giant antenna. These were all years ago, maybe SB has powered down or re-aimed the antenna or lost tuning since.
