By Modena Fire Company #1 January 12, 2011 On January 12th, 2011, Modena Fire Company, along with units from Westwood Fire Company, Coatesville Fire Department and the Coatesville Veteran's Affairs Fire Department, was dispatched for a reported house fire at 24 Bay Street, South Coatesville Borough. The dispatch came through at 22:25.
At 22:28, Fire Police Sergeant, Skip Wallace, arrived on scene, reporting heavy fire in the front of the two story structure. Moments later, Chief Perine arrived, confirming the report and requested a working fire dispatch. He also set up Bay Street Command. The working fire dispatch added the balance of the Westwood fire Company, the Rescue out of Coatesville Fire Department and a Medic 93 unit from Brandywine Hospital. The Parkesburg Fire Company was tasked with rapid intervention.
Ladder 41 arrived on scene and pulled past the structure, going in service with ground ladders. Engine 37-2 arrived on scene. Its crew went in service with 2 1" 3/4 handlines, making an interior attack. Additional handlines were put in place, in the rear of the structure, into the basement. The fire involved all three floors.
Engine 76 was instructed to hit the hydrant at Birch Street and lay into Engine 37-2, establishing a water supply. Engine 37-2 took Bay Street CP, with the Chief as Command. All operations were switched to FD1.
Primary and Secondary searches were negative It was later determined that the residents were not home at the time of the fire. The adjacent structure, 26 Bay Street, was vacant at this time.
The fire was placed under control at 22:57, with all units working. State and County Fire Marshalls arrived on scene to begin the investigation. The fire is thought to be caused by a kerosene space heater, but the cause is still under investigation. The Red Cross was contacted for the five residents that were displaced from their home, to provide shelter and clothing. Belfor was also contacted at this time, for later board up of the structures.
All units remained on scene due to extensive overhaul, until 01:18. Modena Units returned to station to perform extensive clean up. The company was placed back in service at 02:45.
