SOUTH SALT LAKE -- A South Jordan police officer was shot in the leg while trying to arrest a parolee at a South Salt Lake apartment complex overnight.
The officer is a member of the U.S. Marshals Joint Criminal Apprehension Team. Thursday morning, the group was looking for a parole violator, 29-year-old Troy Cabibi, who recently had a warrant issued for his arrest.
Around 1 a.m. JCAT located Cabibi at an apartment complex near 3000 South and 300 East. Officers approached the apartment, announced who they were and that they were coming inside. Police say someone fired a single shot at the officers from inside the apartment.
Sgt. Gary Keller with the South Salt Lake Police Department says, "I don't know if the round came through the door as the door was opening, but one officer was struck in the leg."
When the South Jordan police officer was hit, officers did not return fire. Instead they rushed into the apartment and took two men into custody. A woman and her 2-year-old child also were in the apartment. Police took them into custody as well.
Police recovered the weapon used in the shooting but they still are trying to determine which of the three adults in the apartment fired the shot.
The officer who was shot is in stable condition. He has a shattered femur and currently is in surgery. His injury is not life-threatening.
