I have noticed that when monitoring Edison's system the dispatchers have a "digital" sound to their voices. Field units sound analog.....are they changing over to digital soon?

Back in December, I briefly monitored a P25 system on 938.8250 and the sysID (BEE00-5AA) came back to Edison. Sounds to me like that is what you are hearing.

Hi Scott, Edison is one of my "I've got to get a life" systems that I monitor, along with the Dollar Tree Distribution Center. My son works for Edison so I hear him sometimes and I've heard them working outages close to home. To each his own. Give it a try. Tom

I checked it again today. There wasn't any activity observed, but it does come up as a P25 TRS. I can't recall how I figured out it was SCE, though.

The underground vault that serves my neighborhood blows 3 or 4 times a year. Every time it does blows, power is out for at least 2 hours so I find it worthwhile to keep SCE programmed in my radio. It's nice knowing if I need to purchase additional batteries or ice.

Due to obsolescence / lack of parts availability, Motorola SmartNet / SmartZone systems around the country have been upgrading their core switches to P25 while keeping the 3600 baud site infrastructure. When this happens, the dispatcher audio from connected consoles goes through a digital gateway (there is no analog audio through a P25 core) giving it the 'digitized' effect and sound. A new system ID is also assigned, although usually the 3600 baud infrastructure still broadcasts the original system ID.

Quick Pro96Com info for this site. Heard near I-215/210 freeway.
Might be related to WNJA902 Mt Wilson location.

No More SCE Motorola Type II?

Just tried to tune into SoCal Edison and noticed their Oat Mtn and Burnt Peak Motorola Type II sites are silent, I'm not hearing a thing.

Their new P25 Phase II site on Burnt Peak is humming away... but I'm not seeing any traffic on it.

Site ID: 05AAh-0189

938.8250
938.8375

Nor can I find a new system on Oat Mtn.

Where did everyone go?

SCE

I just used Unitrunker and have 938.850 (Site 6 - Orange County) as full quieting here in San Marcos. (San Diego County) Peer sites are shown as 2, 4, 5, 9, and 10.

It seems to be traffic as normal here but not sure about your area.

As a retired Edison employee, I seem to remember an article about the new system in the Company Magazine a couple of months ago but no actual information about the new system.

My son tells me that they are using the digital system in the Palm Springs area. He says there are more dead spots than with the analog system. He also says that they are doing a lot more communicating with their dispatcher using the truck MDC.

I find listening to any utility companies worth listening to in some circumstances. I live in a rural area and winter storms can bring down the power. I want to know how long the outage might be so I start listening to them when the power goes out. I also listen to them during winter storms (lots of snow when we aren't having a drought) as they often describe what a storm is doing. I can hear units in Santa Barbara, Ventura and the Visalia areas and often here what an approaching storm is doing. I don't listen to SCE for entertainment purposes, but do get information I need.

If you don't get a lot of power outages or heavy winter storms, snow or rain, that affect you then I don't think the listening is worth it.

Thanks Fred, I'm in the desert and it's extra dry. Once in awhile a storm hits hard with wind. So I will load it on my 996xt. Maybe I can hear something now that a member said its online finally.

Edit: it's P25 phase2 so I can't....maybe I will get the 325 or 996p2.
