To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I posted this recently and I am still trying to find the definitive answer http://forums.radioreference.com/motorola-forum/159598-speaker-microphone-differences.html

Anyway, I am considering buying this speaker microphone and I am wondering if anybody here has used this with a FRS/GMRS/MURS radio and, if so, does this have a plain 3.5 mm connector or is it a threaded 3.5 mm connector?

Most of the consumer equipment is cheap and just a plain old 3.5mm. I have that mic, but its about 4 years old and doesnt have the jack on the actual head, its just a rsm. hope this helps.

I have the exact mic. 53724 (date 9933) is on the back. I use it on a motorola T7200 quite often and it works great. It should work with any of the gmrs/frs motorola radios.

By any chance to do you have any other device with a 3.5 mm jack that you can try this with? If you have say just an AM/FM radio with a 3.5 mm jack and you can get audio, then I will feel confortable buying this and using it with my BalckBerry Curve 8350.

Also, does that mean that neither the 7200 or speaker mic have threaded connectors then?

This motorola speaker mic. has a 3.5mm 3 conductor plug and has no ? threads. But WHY would you want to use this on a phone when there are tons of earmics and earbuds which will work better? Motorola speaker mics do not have a response that would sound good with music anyway.

I am sure this will sound unusual, but here goes. One of my hobbies, besides amateur radio, is horseback riding. Last year I bought a Motorola i580, since we are on Nextel iDen at work. I bought the i580 and popped in my work SIM card because the i580 is fairly rugged, water resistant, and has an MP3 player. I listen to comedy, rather than music, most of the time, so I transferred some comedy MP3s to the i580 micro sd card. Since I don't want my ears covered while horseback riding, I bought a Motorola Nextel Remote Speaker Microphone NSN6066 for use with the i580. It works great for me horseback riding, but the i580 will only take a 2 GB micro sd. Since then, I have bought a used BlackBerry Curve 8320 and have installed the Slacker Radio application on it. Much like the Nextel arrangement, I want to simply plug in a remote speaker microphone so I can hear Slacker Radio on the BlackBerry without having my ears covered. The thing I need to find out now is the pinout. I suspect that the speaker microphone 53724 is three points of connection: microphone, speaker, and ground. The BlackBerry works with regular stereo headphones, so I don't know if it is simply three points of connections: left side stereo, right side stereo, and ground or if it is configured differently. That's why I want to find out how the 53724 behaves when plugged into a regular 3.5 mm audio device. I might just get one of those and solder on a different connector or see if any adapters are available.

The Russian site has some details on pin-outs

There is even a wiki:
