So, we will be getting new armed special constables to patrol highways 21 between Pincher Creek and Calgary and 63 between Edmonton and Ft. McMurray that will have all the powers of a police officer. They will also be acting as "complimentary" officers and help patrol "rough bars" and casinos. So, the frequency hunt is soon to be on, unless they end up using the PACS RCMP system... But does anyone here think they will be allowed on the A and B channels, or will they end up using something like Tac 9?

Since they are designed to work inconjunction with the RCMP, I think they would have to have an interoperable system.

I didn't hear how soon these officers will be put in place. If it's not immediate, I'd put money on them being the catalyst for the province ramming thru the province-wide radio network that will replace PACS, MDMRS, etc., and supposed to involve the regionalized radio networks in Calgary and area.

If they are to come online immediately, I'd suspect they'll do with PACS until the above can be established.

I heard units today active East and North of Edmonton on Redwater, Fort Sask. repeaters.

New Sheriff's

Looks like its been a while since word first came out about these new constables but now, here is an updated story from CFCN:

New Sheriffs watching the highways

calgary.ctv.ca

POSTED AT 5:54 PM Friday, September 1, 2006

If you’re heading out of town this long weekend you may see a new sheriff on the roads.

Twenty-one Alberta Sheriffs are now handling traffic enforcement and education on Provincial highways.

Alberta’s Solicitor General introduced the force Friday.

It's the culmination of a six-month pilot project which saw sheriff’s duties expanded from courtroom security and prisoner transfers to include handing out tickets and conducting education check-stops.

The Province says the Sheriffs are here to help, not replace the RCMP.

Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko says “the RCMP officers are highly skilled and trained criminal investigators. (These officers) are highly skilled traffic investigators. That's the difference.”

The Province plans to double the number of Sheriffs to forty-two by Thanksgiving.

The Government has put aside 4.6 million dollars for the force this year.

Indeed; the Calgary Sun's story indicated that these sheriffs are for traffic enforcement on the following highways: 8, 11, 21, 22, 43 and 63. Of those, I have to admit ignorance of where 43 and 63 are; I have a good idea of the others. 8 and 22 are firmly in my area; I would expect if they are patrolling these roads and using PACS, then I will hear them on B2 or A4 this weekend.

So far I heard only one unit on PACS responding too a fatal northeast of Ft. Saskatchewan I understand the primary dispatch is out of Calgary and MIKE mobile.
