Spectrum Shift Threatens Radio Communications

The Washington Post of July 11 contains a long article(Page B7) about the upcoming frequency trade between NEXTEL and Public Safety. The article goes on to say that Fairfax County will be the first jurisdiction in the Washington Metro area to switch (date not cited) and that while this shift takes place,county by county, inter-county communications for public safety will be in peril! Does any one have timing of this switch and what is the imppact on my PRO-96 programming?

There is not a time table that shows this system changes on this date and that system on a certain date. When systems change depends on the results of negotiations between several parties. There could be 4 or more parties involved in each sytem:
1. Nextel is involved with reaching financial agreement and clearing their frequencies in 851 to 854.
2. The public safety agency that is impacted who must reach an agreement with Nextel and approval of TA.
3. The Transition Administrator (TA) can be invloved in mandatory negotiation if voluntary talks don't work and then approving final offers.
4. Any other commercial license holder in the 851 to 854 MHz that must be relocated.

This can be complicated and is worked out by individual sysems.

No one knows if or how our scanners can handle the rebanded systems. Keep your fingers crossed.

Also, to further expand on what Gill wrote, it's anticipated that the Uniden 296D, 796D, 396T, and 246T and the RS Pro-96 and Pro-2096 will be able to re-flashed to accept these new changes. However, as Paul Opitz, the Uniden guy here on RR said, it will be impossible to verify this until the first systems are on-line and can be tested with these scanners.
