I have a quick question regarding SPEN1. How far can a PD transmit? Is there a limit how many jurisdictions an agency can talk to? A couple of times I heard someone "spenning" something and then on top of that another town was trying to communicate with someone else. So I'm guessing that town had a silent SPEN at the time..

generally speaking spen is mostly "line of sight" just like any other vhf simplex frequency.variables such as output power and antenna height play into the equation.i do know of what i consider to be a pretty far spen exchange.a police dept.in central/eastern monmouth county talked base to car on spen 1.the car was in lodi.police hq.was able to make out what he said.yes,several time's town's talk over one another.every pd in the state is licensed for spen.what's even more aggravating is to hear a town with a hot call going out over spen and some childish idiot trying to step on them over the radio.i think that should be ground's for instant termination ! .
