A woman who was apparently smoking while on oxygen died in a fire Tuesday afternoon in a west-side townhome.

Police and fire officials declined to identify the woman, but the condo's owner, Mary Taggs, said the woman was Bridget Finley Dunn, a formerly homeless woman whom Taggs had taken in along with Dunn's husband.

Taggs said she had taken Dunn's husband to a medical appointment at the time of the fire Tuesday.

Colorado Springs firefighters responded to a call at 12:19 p.m. at a townhome on Stepping Stones Way, near Uintah and 21st streets. When firefighters arrived, the fire was out and they found the body, said Lt. Jeff Sievers, public information officer with the fire department. After a police and fire investigation Tuesday afternoon, officials concluded that the victim was smoking while on oxygen.

Taggs, who went to a neighbor's home after learning of the fire, said she first met Dunn near a Safeway, where the woman held up a sign that said "Armed Forces widow needs medicine." Taggs declined to be interviewed further.

Neighbors said emergency crews had been to the home several times over the past month.
