Two people are dead after a man attempting to flee from a police officer on Interstate 25 struck a woman head on, shutting down one direction of the interstate for hours early this morning.
The man, a 25-year-old from Widefield, was parked facing south in the northbound median south of the Cimarron exit when the Colorado Springs Police officer, who was traveling southbound transporting an inmate to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center, attempted to stop and investigate at about 12:30 a.m.
The man took off in his 2002 Volkswagon Jetta, traveling south in the northbound lane at 90 miles per hour.
He struck a 64-year-old Cotopaxi woman who was traveling north on the interstate between South Circle Drive and South Academy Boulevard in her 2002 Saturn.
The drivers of both cars died at the scene, police say. A dog in the Saturn also died.
The accident shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate I-25 for five hours, but all lanes are open this morning.
