This is yet another power play to turn the Iden system into a public safety / public service system, based on a cellular technology. This was the reason that Sprint bought Nextel to begin with and they are trying to save face with a poor business decision. Both the FCC and FEMA have told Sprint that there will be NO cellular based public safety systems.
What's funny is that they saw the rebanding agreements as the in road to roll out this iden based system. Again, it was based on a business plan that included using the current Iden infrastructure as the 'repeater system' and assuring interoperability. The only problem is that the FCC wasn't going to let it happen then and they are not going to let it happen now. This is the reason that Motorola dropped the iden patents and didn't bother to renew them. They would have been building radio systems that would be directly replacing there $1000 a piece P25 mobiles and megabuck repeaters. While this sounds like a win on either count, it's sort of stupid to think that a cell phone is going to cost as much as a P25 radio.
Now I need to preface all this with the fact I am a current Sprint / Nextel customer. I have tried the poor excuse for a PTT system that Verizon tried to pass off as a replacement for iDen. There simply is no comparison, iDen is head and shoulders over "The Network". I will remain with Nextel until they pull the plug on the iDen system, and at that point I will leave Sprint forever.
