Squelch and monitoring trunked systems?

I personally don't think there is any such thing as a dumb question. Does squelch play a role in monitoring trunked systems?

Not, really. Most manuals I've read do suggest you set the squelch at just the breaking point to speed the acquisition of the control channel. But if you're like many of us, you have some conventional freqs programmed in your scanner also (like the NPSPAC freqs). So you'll have to set the squelch to a satisfactory level for the conventional freqs.

I have opened the squelch wide open when trying to trunk a distant system, but if the signal is that weak, the reception is going to be less than optimal anyway.

it may have been my imigination and i will test it out tonite, but i think that the scanner will scan the freq's of a truncked bank slower if the squelch is below the breaking point...but i could be wrong, but i think that occured with my Pro-95...

You're right. With the squelch open, the scanner tries to evaluate every 'active' channel for data. Since the squelch is open, that means every channel you have programmed.

So yes, the squelch does still affect trunked system operation.

Also, if you have the end code scheme turned off, the scanner will wait for carrier drop to return to the control channel. Again, if the squelch is open, the channel never drops and you sit there listening to open squelch.

Joe, End code scheme turned off? What is the end code scheme?
The only trunked system that I monitor is a Mot TypeII Smartzone.
Is there an end code scheme for that type of system? I have monitored just the Trunked system only and I have never heard any noise from
an open squelch.

End Code is what radios use to know when the person has stopped talking. Your Uniden scanners will allow them while RS won't. The RS scanners wait until the carrier squelch on the repeater is dropped to go back to the control channel. Unidens have the End Code setting where it will go back to the control channel once it has seen the End Code instead of waiting for the carrier squelch ending.

Just to expand on what was said, the end code is sent at the end of a transmission to tell the radios to return to the control channel. On some scanners, you can use this code or forego it and use the squelch as the trigger to return to the control channel. There are valid reasons for both types. I prefer using the end code since it also mutes the squelch tails. Carrier mode does not.

There is no such thing as a Radio Shack scanner. They sell GRE & Uniden MADE scanners :wink: .

Let me reword it: Scanners you get from RS.
