So I got a weird issue on my TRX1. I haven’t used it in a month, turned it on to listen to air band and the squelch isn’t working at all on conventional AM or FM channels. It’s like the squelch knob is always set to wide open.

Any ideas?

ok, i had some radio many years ago that if the batteries were low there was no squelch action.
my pro2001 will drop squelch sometimes, but after 40+ years of daily use, it can do what it wants.
if i leave it on, the squelch comes back.

Maybe you're in a really high noise level? Have tried turning the squelch further to the right...maybe all the way up? Is there any very high RF signals in your area, possibly a strong FM broadcast station?

What are you using for an antenna?

If the squelch doesn't start to work after a while then read the scanner with EZ-Scan and save the settings and then download the E version of EZ-Scan and download the E firmware to the scanner. Reset all settings and let the scanner power up. Then go back to your US version of EZ-Scan and download the correct firmware and do the reset values function and program your config files back to the scanner.
If that doesn't solve it has to be a hardware issue. It could be a leaky capacitor or similar and could "heal" itself if left powered on for a few days.

To rule out any programming possibilities, turn on the weather ( storm cloud button) with the antenna removed. Can you adjust the Squelch ok?

Perhaps the TRX-1 suffers the same squelch problems as the TRX-2. If you set the squelch above 9 and it works better but doesn't open on weak signals then the TRX-1 has the same squelch problem as the TRX-2. When squelch is set below 8 it will receive weak signals with a very long squelch tail or maybe open squelch until it is set above 9. Can't understand why Whistler has never addressed this problem.

TRX-1 are a completely different design than TRX-2. TRX-1 are much better in all areas and the squelch works as most other scanners. The TRX-2 squelch have a too large hysteresis, the difference between opening and closing, and are also frequency band dependent that might explain why they need it to work in that way, and are probably hardware related so cannot be fixed. Uniden has a SQ calibration that uses different offset values at different frequencies to make it operate the same in all frequency bands, like professional 2-way radios.

Now that I have time, I can reply back here...

I had before a good pair of NiMh AAs, switched to alkaline, no change there. I have tried using the weather channel scans, it will stay open there even with no antenna.

I'm going to try to flash it with the E firmware then back to the US later today.

The Weather part is independent of any programming. If you had no antenna on WX the Squelch should have worked as normal. Static at full CCW position and moving slowly clockwise the static should go away. So if I understand you correctly, you still have static no matter where the Squelch is adjusted, right? If that's the case then it should go back to Whistler.

Yes, that’s correct. No matter what position the knob is at, it’s not quieting.
