Hi Folks,

Am in my 70's now, so please bear with me a bit.

Haven't used my PSR 500 in quite a while, but would like to again.

I remembered that pressing "3" brings up the versions that are in it, so I thought that
my first step to getting back into the hobby would be to update everything.

Apparently, what I have in the radio now is:

up APP1 version U1.8
DSP App version U1.4
DspVoc F 1.0

Are these the latest ?
If not, where do I go to download the latest ? Would I need all 3 items ?

And, exactly, please, how do I go about the updating process ?
Any hookers or caveats, etc. when doing ?

Just curious: is my 500 still considered one of "the better" units, or should I possibly consider something else (better)? I read about the Uniden, and the GRE 800 version, where they have the built in databases, but most everything I read about them is somewhat negative. Thoughts on ?
Anything new on the horizon ?

Much thanks.
Appreciate the help,
Bob

This page will give you the latest updates, the newest one is at the top.

When you download the zip file, it contains the firmware updates, and a PDF sheet with "very specific" instructions on how to install the updates. Follow them "carefully" and you won't have any problem.

GRE America, Inc. - Powered By Kayako SupportSuite

Your DSP App is current at 1.4,
the up APP version (CPU Firmware) is now 2.1
The DspVoc F 1.0 is not updated.

A quote from the instructions,

"Upgrading your scanner is a quick, simple and safe process. There is no way you can
render your scanner inoperable by performing the upgrade

To check for firmware updates, you would go here: GRE America, Inc. - Powered By Kayako SupportSuite

The 500 is still one of the better scanners on the market. I do love my 800 for the recording feature(Letting people hear chases is always better than trying to describe it.) And the 500, and 800 beat my 396t and xt hands down.

GRE is releasing the 900 soon, but it's basically just the desktop version of the 800, so if you don't need to decode X2-TDMA, or want to record calls, you're fine for now.

I'll let others answer your other questions about the 500 as I'm a little weak on it still.
