While monitoring this evening, I heard the MSP discuss switching to the 'secure channel'. They were on State Police TAC 2 while discussing this. I monitored the system for some time in ID search and did not pick up any encrypted transmissions. I suspect they are using a conventional frequency for their 'secure' communications. Anyone have further information?

It's hard to determine which freq they used; they often will use a 39 or VHF hi band channel that is NOT in use in the local area. I've heard this done often enough to think it's a SOP when going 'secure'.

Could also be a pro-voice talkgroup... thought the St Mary's system was mixed analog/pro-voice... just a thought... Maybe it was such a short conversation, ya missed scanning through...

There are I believe 5 or so encrypted channels that are used by the EST (SWAT) hostage negotiators, admin, and narcotics and one more I think..only a certain few in both the Sheriff's Ofc and MSP have these channels. Since both deputies and troopers make up the investigative team for the county, both have access to these "secure" channels and that may be what they were referring to. Also try putting in 39.920 mhz this seems to be the "TAC" channel or the "B-12" troopers often refer to on the main dispatch channel, it is used as our T/a talk around channels are used. Some interesting conversations on this channel, not sure of any pl used, maybe the standard one for MSP but down here in St. Mary's I don't think it matters...
