St. Pete Beach police to end duties in January
ST. PETE BEACH --
St. Pete Beach's police department will end its duties on Jan. 5.
According to Bay News 9's partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will take over patrolling the streets and other duties for St. Pete Beach for the midnight shift on January 5.
That means the St. Pete Beach Police Department will no longer exist January 6. The move will save the city $1.3 million next year.
Voters passed the referendum Tuesday night by a vote of 58 to 42 percent.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said his agency has offered all 24 St. Pete Beach police department employees jobs.
