Last I remember it was some sort of interoperability system. Somebody here, I don't remember who, had some information on it they were going to post but I don't recall ever seeing it.
Sorry Bob, I forgot to get it out!
Stargate is essentially an audio and control data switch installed in a fixed location and connected to other area EDACS systems.
It allows selected talkgroups to be portable across systems without messy patching via analog audio and radios (as the JPS-1000 does). All control data may be passed (if allowed) to the other systems. Digital audio (ProVoice/Aegis) can be passed as well.
For example, Aurora has a StarGate switch, and systems (currently DIA, Westy/Arvada, Lakewood, and Aurora) are tied into it over a data circuit such as a T-1. Currently they have established 6 Stargate talkgroups, which have the same TG number on all systems.
STARGT-1 15-035/1949
STARGT-2 15-036/1950
STARGT-3 15-037/1951
STARGT-4 04-055/557
STARGT-5 04-056/558
STARGT-6 04-057/559
StarGate-1 is by far the most active.
Back to the Control Data. When a unit keys up, it's original LID is sent to all the other systems on the switch, as well as any special data such as an Emergency Declaration (if allowed.) For example, if Aurora Fire Console 2 keys up, it will be shown as LID 16002 on both Aurora's system and all other systems. If the other systems have an LID database, they can even see the alias for the LID.
For interop, the dispatcher just soft-patches a StarGate group to her main channel, and the other agency does the same. The beauty of this system is that if a StarGate group is used for interop, any dispatcher can see who is speaking, even if it's not their own officer.
The icing on the cake? Since it is EDACS, and is essentially acting as a multi-site system, the users (aside from dispatchers) can not talk over one another as is common in analog patching!
I really can't believe that Denver P/S is not playing, it works vastly better than the JPS patch or patch-to-CLEER that usually gets thrown together.
