STARS - Blacksburg and Montgomery County

Is anyone monitoring VA STARS in the Blacksburg/Montgomery County area? I'm not completely sure the sites are correct in the database as I have possibly encountered some discrepancies (I could be wrong, that's why I'm asking). It appears the sites and their locations on the map are not correct, causing issues with selecting the correct/closest tower(s). What sites are you all having luck with?

To start out with, what scanner are you using? Are you in Montgomery County? Have you programed in the tower locations and if so, which ones?
I have had success but because of the mountains around me I only pick up transmissions from the closest tower.

Yes, I am located right in Blacksburg. But the sites appear to be amiss for this region. For example, the Craig County site is not shown on the map in the database.

Whister 1065 - Fort Lewis Mountain and Dismal Mountain are currently programmed. Hit/miss currently

Not sure of the creator but seems pretty accurate when I have compared it to other sources. Craig County is Potts Mountain and when you look it up under the STARS listing you are just inside the broadcast ring. Recommend using Fort Lewis as it seems to cover most of Montgomery County around Blacksburg.


The rest of the tower locations seem to be outside your area. I hope this helps. I am a Uniden person. Tried the Whistler TRX-2 but just couldn't get the programming.

Thanks, I've had some trial and error with all these sites and it's still hit or miss.

Often, the channel will show up, but no audio comes through.

Could there be a setting causing these issues as well within the 1065? I.e. how it interacts with each site/procedure.

You might want to ask any specific programming questions in the Whistler forum. I am not familiar with the 1065. You might get better answers.
