Hello everyone, I am basically new to the trunking scanning scene. I work in Isle Of Wight County and purchased a PRO-97 for my wife to scan our local freqs when I'm working. (I am sure a few of you can relate to the wife wanting to listen in on the action while you're working) Anyway this scanner does all my counties "conventional" freqs fine but I am looking for ways to play with the other 992 channels when I am bored at home. LOL So is there anyway at all I can program this scanner to listen to Division 5 State Police units? I attempted to program the STARS "frankiln" freqs in and got data sounding transmissions from about 3 of the 5 channels. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and considerations. I believe the system your trying to listen to is apco 25 digital, that scanner won't receive digital. Look in the rr database for virginia, and your county, anything analog you'll be able to receive.

VSP is still simulcasting on the legacy freqs of 159.165 MHz and 159.135 MHz for 5th Division. You should be able to hear those frequencies from Isle of Wight.

For all the listing and PL tones see:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=595

At some point in time you will want to get a digital scanner.

Without a digital scanner, you will not hear the TAC channels and all the other TGs from numerous other state agencies.

Check this out this link for more data: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=3783

The problem with a digital scanner is that you will want to take it to work with you so you can listen to the all the state transmissions. Your wife may not like the idea of you stealing the scanner. But wait....you can leave her the old one...and you take the new one!

If you have any specific questions shoot me a private message.

Yeah, welcome sheriff89!

Pretty good bunch on here and you will get all the help you need.

I have a bunch of military air files for the PRO 97 if you have the program called Win97 for your PC - highly recommended by the way. Browse the wiki here and you'll get caught up in no time.

Is 5th Division an actual simulcast? (Meaning you always hear the exact same thing on both systems?) This would lead me to believe that 100% installation is complete in 5th Division?

Is DIV1 a simulcast - DIV1 comms on STARS and Conventional are not the same comms and usually not the same units talking.

Anyone?, BA?, Anyone?

If they are simulcasting, then reception of STARS on my STARS capable scanners is pathetic. I've left STARS running on PRO96COM overnight and the number of times the Div 5 TG's are used is pretty slim.

It would be nice to know if they are or are not simulcasting though and if not how much is being simulcast. Would definately help determine how well STARS is being received.

The dispatch TG's are patched to the legacy freqs. Most of the time. The radio at my ofc is a legacy GE. In order for Richmond (or Chesapeake) to hear me, the patch has to be up...and lately, SOMEBODY has disabled the patch on several occasions w/o bothering to tell anyone. A ph call to Richmond usually solves this quickly, but still pisses one off... Just another reason to ALWAYS CARRY THE STARS PORTABLE!

The dispatch TG's are definitely patched to the old freqs though.

And vise-versa?

I just dont think I hear the same thing on STARS TG's as I do the conv dispatch channels - maybe I am and I dont realize it.

Maybe that is what I should have said to begin with. When I hear VSP on STARS, I hear them on the legacy as well. But I don't always hear legacy on STARS. Thank you for that one lemish.

Motorhead, I like your signature.

Post Wisely,
There's no smiley marked "STUPID".

There really needs to be though. :D

Ok, Thanks

Ok I understand that I cant get STARS and I am getting the hang of this trunking thing slowly but I did program in Suffolk and was listening to them last night for a while, weak reception but if I extended my arm just to the left of my nose and leaned forward just right I could hear them. LOL
I did program those 2 freqs for the old division 5 channels 9 and 10 but have yet to pick up anything on those. think I am just in a bad spot or is there something else I need to do?
Thanks again everyone, great group of knowledgeable people here I have learned.

Jon,

How close are you to the Franklin Area Office? I can hear the UHF link on 458.35 (car repeater freq) when I'm in the Franklin area.

As another resource, check out the HRSP. Link is fmon's and my signature. If you can install either an attic or outside antenna for that -97, you should be able to plenty on that scanner.

Sheriff89,

Also try the link @ www.starrsoft.com and check out the win97 program, if you haven't already. It is set up to program your 97 by computer instead of by hand. It is really a great help, especially in programming trunked systems.
