Can anyone tell me where in the state these STARS sites are:

Leigh Mountain
Fork Mountain
Thornburg
Rumford
Edge Hill

All these are approximate.

Leigh Mtn - near the Prince Edward/Charlotte Co. line, just west of Farmville. I'm thinking just south of Pamplin City.

Fork Mtn - NW Madison County, near the State Wildlife Management Area

Thornburg - off I-95 about 10 miles south of Fredericksburg. This is also the name of the exit.

Rumford - near King William CH

Edgehill - off US301 in King George County

Hope this helps.

Heck, I'm trying to find out the same thing about Div. 2! As far as I can tell, they should be deep into testing by now--but the only testing they seem to do is to see how much they can get by with nothing but Fork Mountain & Thornburg online. <g>

Maybe things were waiting on the secondary NOC that they were building in Salem.

I'd like to know more about this myself. Let's hope an end user chimes in.

Subtle, LMAO!!!!

No word from the techs or STARS folks on the buildout but I have heard 7th getting patched (in error) to First. Think they are working on the implementation in 7th currently.

Unlike an analog signal which will picket fence when on the fringe of a repeater digital signals are either there or they are not. True or false, one or zero.

When a unit is marginal into a STARS tower they sound like they are encrpyted and the dispatcher tells them they are "robotic". The trooper then usually calls the dispatcher on 21.

What are you hearing that seems to be Wytheville? There are several possible explanations.

1 - Fairfax Ch-2 is 159.000 [127.3], which I believe is also used by Div.4 in Wytheville. If you see "Wytheville" or Div.4 on your alpha display but don't actually hear "Wytheville" mentioned (or if you hear a call on I-95 or I-66 <g>) this may be why.

2 - Culpeper Ch-2 is 158.985 [167.9] which is used by part of Div.6 (Salem) that is adjacent to Div.4 (Wytheville). Both areas include I-81, I think, which could lead to some confusion. Couple that with the possibility that you might hear a bulletin which originated in Wytheville, which could cause the name to be mentioned on the air.

3 - One of the STARS Wytheville TG's, 756, is used extensively for radio testing in Richmond. If a radio tech were on the road in your area and affiliated with a tower on this TG, you might hear quite a bit of traffic.

Might any of these scenarios fit your situation?

I monitor off the Fork Mt. site and have noticed a Wytheville TG come up a few times. I couldn't figure it out, since I hadn't heard of them building their system out as of yet. That scenario might explain it.

For what it's worth, the new VSP Salem dispatch center building is up and on line. The dispatchers
have moved from the old building out front to the new building in the back. The new dispatch room
is almost the size of a tennis court. Big difference from the cramped area they use to have.

The status of the new equipment is still in some state of flux. There is constant work being done
and the new radio equipment is still being installed. Haven't heard any date as to when it will all
be up and functional on the new trunking system.

I am told the new VSP Appomattox dispatch center is just starting to be built. Haven't
seen it first hand and you can't see much from the main highway.
