For someone new to the hobby but does not want to go all IN with the most expensive feature rich transceiver yet want to also consider the DIGITAL side of HAM radio
what equipment would you recommend. Perhaps a 10 meter radio could be a start?

A 10m radio -- is there one in the marketplace hese days? -- may not be a wise purchase. Yes, 10m is open during this sunspot maximum but a 10m radio will be only good as a doorstop or paperweight in a few years. (The solar cycle lasts about 11 years.

You may want to look at the FT8 book sold by the ARRL. You might consider joining your local amateur radio club and put the question to the floor in s meeting.

HTH a bit.

10-meter-only radios are not very common. Most of them are based on CB radios and they may not have useful features that an all-band HF radio would have. You may only have 10 meter privileges now, but an all-band HF radio will fall right into place when you upgrade.

Pretty much any HF radio can be used with sound card data modes such as FT8. There are several sound card interfaces on the market, such as the SignaLink USB, that can interface between your radio and your computer.

Newer HF radios often have built-in sound cards. You don't have to buy an interface as all it takes is a USB cable between radio and computer to get you going with sound card data modes.

Looking at the new base station HF radios on DX Engineering's website, here's what you'll find:

Icom IC-718, no built-in sound card interface, $860
Yaesu FT-710 Field, built-in sound card interface, $875
Yaesu FT-710 AESS, built-in sound card interface, $945
Icom IC-7300, built-in sound card interface, $1100
Icom IC-7100, built-in sound card interface, $1200
Yaesu FT-991A, built-in sound card interface, $1200

To add to @AK9R 's excellent response, 10m is highly dependent on the solar cycle, generally speaking. While we are at the solar maximum right now, a few more years and 10m will be largely dead again, except for local communications. Also, 10m is rarely usable at night for any sort of DX.

There are plenty of used HF radios that cover all the HF bands. If you want a newer radio, I've seen the IC-7300 for $700. No need for a sound card interface or anything, and great radio that will last you for years.
