Purpose of Position
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Why does the job exist?
This position provides technical support to multiple state and federal agencies that utilize the Department of Information Technology's Public Safety Enterprise 2-way radio communications. Incumbent responds, on a rotating schedule, to call-back at any hour of the day, on weekends, and holidays, for communications system diagnostic and restoration..
How does it get done?
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Installation, maintenance and repair of mobile and portable radios, 2-way radio base stations repeaters and digital microwave radios;
- Install and perform maintenance on Radio Frequency (RF) systems; installation of systems such as wireless Internet access points, cell phone towers, amplifiers, and other equipment used for transferring radio signals;
- Respond to tickets requesting radio installations; software installation (for law enforcement vehicles, and boats);
- Equipment repairs;
- Infrastructure repairs - consist of going out to the numerous tower sites and/or dispatch centers statewide to perform troubleshooting on radio frequency issues. Tower infrastructure support requires a two-man team, which can take 3 to 4 hours of drive time in uneven terrain, utilizing a four-wheeler or snow car to get up to the tower site; utilizing equipment such as service monitors, spectrum analyzers, watt meters, volt meters, computers, hand-tools, oscilloscopes.
- Radio Microwave Technician must know both communication and radio frequency system as the tower sites all have generators, regular utility power and battery power plants. The Radio Microwave Technician must be familiar with how all three power sources operate and how the power sources are integrated into the radio system.
- Perform preventive maintenance and daily system monitoring; and, checking alarms and system status information.

Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate has:
- Experience working with Radio Frequency (RF) technology;
- Experience working with Digital Microwave technology;
- Experience working with Land Mobile Radio (LMR) technology;
- Basic IT networking and computer skills to include transferring files and use of Microsoft Office applications;
- Certifications that apply to Electronics, Radio Frequency, Land Mobile Radio or Microwave Digital technology.
Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in end user support, systems administration or network administration. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License; obtain Defensive Driving Certification within 30 days of employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Very long hours (10-12 hour days) are sometimes necessary to cope with system problems. Driving long distances (500 mile round trips) is sometimes necessary on improved and unimproved roads. Lifting in excess of 50 - 70 pounds is not uncommon. Occasional climbing steel communication towers to 300 feet in all types of weather conditions. Transportation and operation of All-Terrain and snow cat vehicles in mountainous terrain is required. Working in odd physical postures is necessary when installing or repairing radio equipment in vehicles and on other remote site installations.
