I have a 2005 Tahoe that used to belong to the NYSP. Does anyone know if there is any contact info for fleet services? I'm trying to figure out what the unit # was. I'm hoping to track down pictures of it when it was in service.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just email their Public Information Officer at PIO@troopers.ny.gov and give them the VIN Number of your vehicle. Not sure if they will give you the exact Unit Number but they will give you the Troop that it was assigned to.

Call your nearest NYSPD troop. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

I found this for you..

State Police vehicles are auctioned through the New York State Office of General Services (OGS) - Fleet and Properties Management Office. Auctions are held throughout the year at various locations within the state. For further information on auction sites, vehicle offerings, dates and times, contact OGS at (518) 457-6335 or visit their website at: NYS OGS - Support Services - State Surplus Personal Property.

Just contact the PIO. That is what I did when I purchased my 04 SP Tahoe. Not to mention I did a thorough head to toe inspection on the vehicle after I got it home, not to find the problems but to find things that were left in the vehicle in the cracks, I found a handcuff key and they left the factory installed taillight flasher(which most likely is still on yours as it is a GM factory installed).

NYS OGS is now selling vehicles and all other items Via Ebay

Got an email back, they don't retain records. Oh well it was worth a shot.

I wonder if it might be worth getting a CarFax report for the vehicle's VIN if you haven't already?

CARFAX® - Official Site - Vehicle History Reports on Used Cars for Sale

CarFax says it gives fleet information, maybe that would show a unit number?

Or, maybe it was in an accident, and you could cross-reference the date with any accident photos that might be on-line in that town's news archives?

.

A lot of times i have seen the unit number and or the state number ex "05-xxxx on the drivers door jam. Most all state cars have a state number issued to it ie "year of item-item number"

Did you climb on top and look at the roof, if it had the number there you might be able to make it out.

Really, that's funny. I did it for my car and they got right back to me as to the Troop it was assigned, maybe it was a Headquarters Unit or some other special Unit.

The flasher is located passenger rear underneath behind the rear quarter panel by the bumper.

Where was the flasher located?

Nothing written in the door jam, although I could see an outline where a sticker was removed. I know in Mass if you run a title history in the RMV it will tell you the plate numbers that were attached to it. I wonder if New York has something similar? Or if the VIN is run would it show the last plate assigned to it in the state.

just be glad if you get a title with some of these cop car auctions. there are a few out there without!

your best best, and your mileage will vary, is to contact the local SP Troop HQ you bought it at auction from and ask to speak with the AMI (aye em eye). that number "05-123" is called a VAN (vehicle accounting number) and essentially is what the state police uses in lieu of VIN for internal identification, even more so than the plate number. if the VAN is still there, and the AMI keeps good records, you're in business. or so I'm told.

I found the handcuff key in the magazine holder of the driver's seat. Makes me more wonder if a prisoner put it there, lol. State cars don't have cages

In Troop E the NYS plate# on the vehicle is same as the Unit# (ex:1E-20). I'm not sure if they are actual NYS DMV issued plates or not. A reg search of the VIN may yield results if they are.

Still digging to try to find a marking somewhere. Did the roofs have numbers on them? I'll have to look at it in direct sunlight to try and see.

if it was retired after 2008 then yes. roof decals are a recent addition in the relative scheme of things. but only for marked patrols.
