What scanner, antenna, etc. are you using? How far away is the system? There are to many intangibles to answer your question intelligently.

We're talking STARS, right? I'm guessing you are trying to receive the Richmond, or Chesapeake CC based on the 800RS Ant.

Am I right, so far? oh, Where are you located?

Did you also program the Alt. CC's in case they switched? And you did double check you dl'd the correct CC's? You can also check your squelch (keep it low)

These are just a couple things as I do some quick reading.

Did they reband? I'm seeing references to a CC of 855.4625 which doesn't match the DB

I keep seeing references to STARS being tricky to program, but the wiki about it disappeared. (I followed every link I could find)

I would try these two cc's 152.74250c 152.78750c

If those two don't work these should 152.57750c 152.75750c

If nothing else try to PM GROCKSHD he has helped other users who had VSP probs.

Tim,

Suggest you create 3 separate systems; one for each of the following sites:
1. Chesapeake - load the following control channel frequencies: 152.7425, 152.7875, 152.0225, 152.5625
2. Eastville - load these control channel frequencies: 151.1225, 158.8575, 151.0475
3. Hampton - load these control channel frequencies: 152.5775, 152.7575

Set each system as P25 Auto.
Put a wildcard talk group in for each system. Then assess which system you receive best.

RS PRO owners seem to have a lot of trouble programming STARS and I have wondered why that is since I never had any problem with my Uniden 996XT or my GRE. You would think that all digital scanners would basically work the same way but I guess not. Anyhow did you try entering the Base Frequencies or custom table if applicable? Sorry if you have already try this but your scanner should pick up STARS and I am curious why it will not.

Frequency Table:
1: Base: 762.00625 MHz, Spacing: 6.25 kHz
2: Base: 136.00000 MHz, Spacing: 2.50 kHz
3: Base: 146.00000 MHz, Spacing: 2.50 kHz
4: Base: 156.00000 MHz, Spacing: 2.50 kHz
5: Base: 166.00000 MHz, Spacing: 6.25 kHz
6: Base: 136.00000 MHz, Spacing: 6.25 kHz
7: Base: 161.59375 MHz, Spacing: 6.25 kHz

Custom Table for Pro-96/2096:
CH Lo CH Hi Base Freq Offset Step
8192 12287 136.00000 8192 2.500
12288 16383 146.00000 12288 2.500
16384 20479 156.00000 16384 2.500
20480 24575 166.00000 20480 6.250
24576 28671 136.00000 24576 6.250
28672 32767 161.59375 28672 6.250

Ever since VSP started with their new system, even when just testing, they've listed that 146.000 channel which is an amateur, not PS, frequency. Does anyone know if they're actually using 146, and if so, how and why?

They list is as a channel or as a base freq? Two different things...

FYI, Posts #12 and 13 above are helpful if you are programming in a Pro-96, but they aren't necessary for the Pro-197 or the Pro-106. I think those two scanners already figure all this stuff out for you automatically.

Because that IS the base frequency. If you don't list it, older scanners won't know what to do.

I think you just are confused on the terminology, there is a Wiki here on trunking that explains it in more detail.

Yes I did not mean to confuse anybody. Last night when I looked at the programing in my 996XT, the Base Freq were included but I do not know how they got there. I used Freescan to program that one. I was more wondering why so many people have problems programing STARS on some of the RS scanners. It can be done becuase I have seem them working at a couple of Radio Shacks. Just wonder if you have to do something special to program STARS.

I don't know if I can offer any helpful tips, but I didn't have any trouble programming my PRO-197 with STARS state police talkgroups last March. I used the ARC500 software that came with the scanner, connected to the RadioReference database, and selected the towers and talkgroups for my region. I have no trouble picking up the troopers and the VDOT motorist assistance units that operate on the state police channels. So I know it's possible.
