As this case is still under active on-scene investigation, whether this was suicide, accidental, or otherwise is pure conjecture until the NJSP official statement has been issued. Media assumptions (sometimes false) are all too frequent in NJ.

WCBS Channel 2 News website is reporting it a suicide. The Asbury Park Press site is reporting it as suspisious. Also in that story a State Police spokesperson said reports of a manhunt are false and that no one else was involved. Well, they now say no one else was involved, however, I was monitoring the SP Troop C System and they WERE looking for a red Isuzu with bullet holes in the side. They even had a plate number, which came back to someone from the Old Bridge area. An alert was also issued on SPEN 1 with regards to the red Isuzu that, as was stated in the alert, "is involved in the shooting of a state trooper". A Monmouth County Sheriffs officer spotted it on Rt. 9 in Marlboro going in the opposite direction from him, but by the time he got turned around he lost sight of it. I heard that on MC Sheriffs 4. And, at one point, while monitoring Troop C Command Post TG, I heard troopers were enroute to Old Bridge PD HQ where "everybody was meeting up". They also had a number of helicopters in the air searching for the person/vehicle. So yes, they WERE looking for someone who, at the time, they thought was involved in this incident and to say these reports by some media outlets are false reallly isn't fair to these media sources. This "spokesperson" should have gotten his facts straight before he issued the "false reports by the media" statement.

Yeah, right around the time the trooper was found they had at least 2 unsolicited independent reports of a Red pickup ruck/SUV. One had being seen nearby on the Parkway, I guess driving erratically or something to draw attention to it. Then they also got a report of a Red Isuzu Trooper with "6 or 7 bullet holes in it" driving on Route 18 near the GSP. So the stars did kind of align to lead them down that path. However even early on in my listening as the SWAT team was heading toward the house the plate came back to in Old Bridge they were being told to secure the house from the outside for investigative purposes only and not enter the house. Not the instructions I'd expect they'd be given if they still thought they were searching for someone who had just shot a trooper.

As far as the news media I guess it depends when they were reporting it and if they're attributing it as an official statement. If you're going to report off the scanner traffic you have to keep up with it, and understand it's an evolving situation. You can't be telling people information that's 20 minutes old as you have the ability to create a panic/mob scene, etc. I'm sure the nature of the event affects the statement as well. If they were looking for someone who shot a cop still they would likely be glad the media was helping to disseminate the information. But because of how the incident progressed, they're understandably a little upset and the media does make itself a very easy target. I'm sure by the 5pm news they'll already be staked out outside the widow's or mom's house ready to shove cameras and mics at whoever shows their face.
