Yes, #77 is the NJSP Aggressive Driver Hotline. If your call is out of NJSP juristiction, a report will be forwarded to the appropriate agency.

Of course, if your answer is NO to the question "Are you willing to sign complaints, sir?" it's a wasted call.

BTW, the amendment to the "cell phone/texting" law starting March 1st does allow for making hand-held cell phone calls when matters of public safety or reporting of such is involved. And as has been the case since the start public safety is EXEMPT from this law.

Last nights drive went pretty well....It almost went flawless until I came up on some ******* doing 40...Realized that he was swirving I called that #77 and they directed me to the state police..I gave them the license plate number and mile marker and I'm pretty sure they pulled him over. I counted 8 troopers on the way down...BTW I didn't spill my beer..lol...Happy New Year!

Unless NJ stop laws are different from NY, the complaint can still be forwarded, and the car stopped after observation by a police agency. Not necessarily a wasted call.

I asked the man on the phone if he wanted me to stay behind the guy until a trooper came and he said don't put myself in harms way and that a trooper will look for him.

Regarding "signing complaints" as a civilian... you have to be able to identify the person in question in court (if either of you actually show up) to be able to complete any sort of action. Secondly, I'm not going to go as far as saying it is a wasted call, however... you as a caller is strictly a heads up to whatever agency/agencies you are talking to. Unless an offense is observed by an officer (whether something similar to what you as the caller observed or something he/she observes on his own), the driver is free to continue driving. We (as in dispatchers) will never ask you to stay behind a "offensive car" as it only puts the caller in more danger. Whether the caller listens is completely up to them, but we will advise them that the information given will be broadcast out to the appropriate agencies.
