How can lowly Rockford/Winnebago County afford to operate a police helicopter when Milwaukee County can't?

Milwaukee county can, but the county's Risk Management told them they aren't going to after they crashed the first one. They were offered another bird free (or close to it) but couldn't accept it. Like a lot of larger cities and counties, they are self-insured and the bean counters in RM told them no.

Oh well...would have been nice.

The LEAC is funding the bird, so Rockford is paying $0 for it...it's the same as "Air One" out of Zion, Il.

Check the website at www.airsupport.org and this will explain a lot. 3 OH58 copters were obtained from the military. One is completed and the other 2 are being worked on now.
