A policy just came out at my FD that was based on the National Response Plan. Colorado is going to be migrating to NIIMS radio IDs for all units statewide over the next couple of months. This is an attempt to standardize unit radio signatures so when the statewide mutual aid plan goes into effect, you can call for a unit and be guaranteed to get what you call for. Reason being, in the Metro area, some depts call Ambulances Rescues, others use Rescue for a Heavy Rescue, etc...

Some of the anticipated changes will be (of course subject to change):

Engine stays Engine
"Rescue" (Ambulance) goes to Medic
"Heavy Rescue" goes to Rescue
"Medic" (EMS Super) goes to "EMS"

And the debate yet to be settled is what to do with "Truck"

By NIIMS, Truck is a unit without a pump and water tank, ie Denver and Aurora have "trucks." Quint is a unit with a ladder and water and a pump. Some talk was to change everything over to "Ladder" for a straight stick and "Truck" for a bucket. But again, what happens to "Qunit." Logic says quint stays the same, but we'll see...

More to come later...
