STATUS OF OPEN SKY IN PA

• 41 counties with 95% operational coverage or better;
• 16,111 registered radios;
• 15 active state agencies;
• 41,592 square miles of operational radio coverage;
• 232 high-profile tower base stations constructed and operational;
• 338 low profile Cell Sites constructed and operational; and 13 of 81
State Police stations, plus 6 RACINO locations using 800 MHz voice.
By the end of 2008:
• 250 additional Cell Sites;
• 54 counties will have 95% coverage or better;
• 8 counties will have at least 90% coverage;
• 5 counties, all in North Central PA, will have 80% coverage.

Open Sky In Cumberland Co

Police in one part of Cumberland County are having problems with their radios — problems they say are potentially putting officers in harm’s way.

Barry Sherman, chief of police for Middlesex Township, says the radios his officers use routinely fail. The signal loss can happen at any time, he says, and he is concerned that sooner or later someone is going to be seriously injured.

“You’ll be just driving down the street and it just drops,” he added
