Flew (as passenger) into Hong Kong once---scariest approach & landing ever o_O

You were scared? What about the pilots? ;)

With this approach to runway 13, you headed straight for the hill with the checkerboard painted on the side using instruments for guidance. If you didn't see the checkerboard you immediately executed a missed approach i.e. added power and climbed up to get above the terrain. If you saw the checkerboard, you immediately (there's that word again :)) banked right to line up on final for the runway 48 degrees off the original course.

From the Aviation Stack Exchange forum:

Runway 13 at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport (closed in 1998 and replaced by the current airport at Chek Lap Kok) had a hideously difficult approach in which pilots would fly in from the west, following an instrument guidance system (IGS) to the approach’s middle marker (also helpfully marked by a giant checkerboard painted on a hillside, which, if not spotted in time, required a missed approach), and then immediately hand-fly a steep right turn at very low altitude directly over the heart of Kowloon City to line up, seconds before landing, with the runway, using only the Mk. I eyeball for guidance, with no room at all for error.

1545- Pico 61 flt (KC-10s # 86-0027 & 85-0031) heading towards Norfolk working A2A (268.025).
I also was hearing these 2 tankers out of Mcguire and following them on adbsexchange. I was also hearing either inter plane or tanker air to air from them on 310.25 . Has anyone else ever hear them here? And they where also on 303.0.

jsoergel identified these planes I heard in Kentucky as C-130s from Dyess AFB, Texas returning from an overseas deployment.

Here's some audio I got from 310.25 at 5:17 pm EDT where the planes appear to be planning their arrival, possibly with a flyby for the home crowd after the deployment.

Last night 2113 local CABAL-61 KC-10 #81-0189 and CABAL-81 #86-0035 departing McGuire
for Hawaii "lets check our HF on 6761".
Haven't heard that A/A HF freq for a long time.
So far looking at 9 CABAL tankers headed into Hickam. I think may be for other than the Aussie Pitch Black exercise.

0400 local BLUE-22 KC-135 #62-3578 coming South from McGuire.
Assume for F-35A delivery.
