Did some research on these aircraft - seems Dynamic has quite a few of these aircraft and a few 737-500s as well. Besides everything else they have......

I counted seven DH8A (DH8-100 series), two DH8B (DH8-200 series) and one DH8C (DH8-300 series) aircraft (they probably have more but the FAA is not up to date yet).

On the 737-500 side I counted three registrations but based on the sequence they have registrations paid for additional 737-500s.

Interesting at 19:50 local was a bunch of chatter on 121.500 between airliners seeing something
to the South.. Someone said prob second stage of Space X launch. One said looks to be over Norfolk way.
One airline pilot said probably hypersonic and other comments LOL :)

BLUE-32 KC-135 #62-3578 off McGuire to Northeast. Maybe to bring back some F-15C's from LN.
At near 40k altitude near Maine assume crossing the Pond.

The SpaceX launch occurred at 18:11 EST - but it could have been the second burn for the 2nd stage since the launch was over Cuba and southwest bound (for polar orbit). So technically they probably where watching as it was overhead moving southwest.

121.5 came alive here in Kentucky around 7:50 pm/0050Z as well. Timing sounds right (~ 90 minutes after launch) for a low earth orbit first pass.

My earlier sea story here:

I was flying an A310 for Pan Am from JFK to Europe around 1990. We were up in Gander's domestic airspace waiting to pick up our oceanic clearance for the crossing. Someone on 121.5 said 'look overhead'. It was after sunset and the Shuttle was cruising over us on the external tank leaving a glowing ionized trail.

Over the years I've also seen an Indian missile launch at night over the Bay of Bengal with many stagings. And a couple of launches over the North Pacific routes eastbound in the pre-dawn zodiacal light. I'm sure a Cobra Ball RC-135 was looking over my shoulder somewhere in the darkness on the NOPAC sightings.

From the Seesat-L visual satellite observer's forum:

Falcon 9 second stage fuel dump observed

From: ronlee--- via Seesat-l <seesat-l_at_satobs.org>
Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2022 18:02:00 -0700
Around 0049 UT, 31 January 2022 [he corrects the Zulu date to 1 February 2022 in a subsequent post - wbagley]. Falcon, Colorado USA

Due east. It may have been visible sooner but I just walked
outside. It continued but fainter as it went south.

It was roughly two minutes early on Marco's elset. I knew the timing
and sky location would be the same with a one day delay.

Thanks Marco.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — FOX4 has received multiple photos Monday night from viewers about a weird light in the sky.
FOX4 Meteorologist Joe Lauria explains it was a second stage separation of the SpaceX Falcon 9 that launched from Florida Monday evening. The second stage flew over the middle part of the country and separated, which is what many in the metro saw in the sky.

Here's a composite recording using LiveATC feeds at BWI, MRB, FLO, CKB, HKY.

Great audio.. yeah thats what heard.. I guess the setting sun yet dark here lit up that second stage at altitude pretty good. There is always the perfect pilot chiming in.. "Didnt you read your notams"? Funny reply on that comment.. :)

Did someone mention that 121.500 is not very active? Good to see everyone was monitoring the frequency in the cockpit.
:)

Thanks for that clip AirScan. (y) As you can see, the 'guard police' chime in with D'Artagnan's 'On Guard!' (he spelled it differently ;)) whenever some else transmits. And Delta is legendary on 121.5 for giving inadvertent passenger announcements along with pedantic advice to the lesser mortals on the frequency.

Prior to the 9-11 attacks, domestic flights didn't monitor 121.5 that much in my experience. After 9-11 the prospect of being shot down (and having to fill out the paperwork even if you weren't) had most folks put 121.5 on the second VHF receiver. However, even now if there is chatter or interference it is so easy to deselect or turn down the volume and miss a call on guard.
