A/C Coast Guard to Jacksonville.

The Coast Guard is sending personnel from the mid-Atlantic region south in preparation for Hurricane Gustav.
Officials said 22 personnel from the Atlantic City air station are being deployed to Jacksonville, Fla., on a C-130 from Elizabeth City, N.C.

A rescue helicopter also is being sent to Jacksonville.

"The reason for the deployment is to get people prestaged just outside where the hurricane would hit so that we'll be ready to respond to rescue any individual who may have been caught in the path of the hurricane," said Lt. Cmdr. William Makell,a pilot the Atlantic City air station, in a news release.

I have to believe that the 0210 EDT startup time is incorrect, maybe meant 1410 EDT?

Noticed yesterday that this was canceled.

Just a civilian related note starting late yesterday at least US Airways has switched over to
the CACTUS radio callsign instead of USAIR flt ##.
Was old America West callsign they bought out so guess maybe easier to read.
Heard USAIR pilot joking last night to ATC about it.Says,"Will take some getting used to".

I notice their smaller Express CRJ2 aircraft flights are still using WISCONSIN.

1045 Pilot on ZDC ripping the new switch in callsigns.
"What a dumb management decision"! Mentions possible confusion with United Airlines possibly.
"On your screen they dropped the AWE data tag?
He was not happy but others seem to not mind.

Ref below post..
Found the Notam Eric,thanks..

NOTAM Number : FDC 8/5299
Issue Date : August 27, 2008 at 1731 UTC
Type : Special

Plain Language text is not available for this NOTAM. The traditional NOTAM text is given below:

FDC 8/5299 FDC SPECIAL NOTICE AS A RESULT OF THE CONSOLIDATION OF US AIRWAYS (USA) AND AMERICA WEST AIRLINES (AWE) EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 2008 AT 0800 UTC UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ALL FLIGHTS OPERATED UNDER EITHER CORPORATE LIVERY WILL HAVE THE TELEPHONY "CACTUS". AIRCRAFT OPERATORS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT ATC WILL UTILIZE THE CALL SIGN "CACTUS" WHEN COMMUNICATING WITH OR REFERRING TO THOSE FLIGHTS

Hello,

Air Wisconsin is flying the CRJ-200 for US Airways Express.
http://www.airwis.com/

FAA JO 7340.2 Contractions contains voice callsigns and other useful information. A pdf is available on this page.

Re CACTUS: There's another site that I use that presents the information in a nice, simple format so you can look up callsigns, airline codes, etc. I like it -- you might not since it's a Wikipedia site. They've had a note posted for some time about the switch to CACTUS for the US Air flights. Here's the basic site and then you can alphabetize any of the columns:

Re: 252.800

Guys,

0800 EDT- Have a two-ship formation using 252.8 as interplane freq. Chatting about having plenty of cold Diet Cokes on board and lead plane apologizing for confusion & rerouting on take off.

I have this listed as unspecified AAR freq. Does anyone have any more specifics?

(snip).
TUE 02-09-08

1748Z : HOSER/HOSR 11 wkg TORCH or FORCE [not sure] on 303.000 - do you know the status of HOSER 12? Are they taking off....??? ..... OK, will monitor 252.800.

After searching thru some old logs and a check of a few mil boards, I think 252.800 is used as interplane by 108ARW HOSER KC-135s the way 139.875 is used by TEAM KC-10s [although not exclusively in either case].

Every log I checked w/252.800 has HOSER as the callsign. I don't hear that freq used a lot around here as I don't hear HOSERs as much as I do the TEAMs. In fact I realized I didn't have it programmed any more ..... back it goes.

FWIW, HOSER 11 went up to AR609 to refuel VT F-16s MUSKET 11 & 12 on 276.500. I believe they originally planned it as a two-ship.

COYOTE-41 (probably AH-1W from HMLA-775) calling Range Control 339.6
Listening to range ops on the Quantico TRS I can hear in the background what certainly sounds like a Cobra.
1940- Unk with Quantico Range 328.4, weak but could make out that he has some rockets.

Guard Dog CAP began at 1000. Players are TANKER 10 (KC-135R, 58-0074, 171st ARW PA-ANG Pittsburgh) and BOAR 33 & 34 (F-15, 366th Fighter Wing, Mountain Home AFB ID).
BOAR flight more than likely operating from Langley AFB. Primary freq with HUNTRESS is 228.9 and also being used for AR.
Not sure which squadron the fighters are from. There are three within the 366th FW - 389th/390th/391st Fighter Squadrons. (See 1733 CAP item below)
The reason for TANKER 10 rather than 01 is that the CAP was supposed to begin two days ago according to the originally posted TFR. TANKER 01-09 would have been used during those two days so they're picking up the old schedule as of this morning.

Also in the 0900 hour - and into the 1000 hour - we saw just about everyone in this area flying...
SCARY and BULLY flights of F-16s from DC-ANG Andrews went south - probably to the Dare Range in NC. (Interflight freqs 143.6 and 139.15)
DEVIL flight of four F-16s NJ-ANG Atlantic City to VR-705 in PA...BANGER 21 to Patuxent (Interflight 138.425 and 138.875)
WARDOG flight of A-10s MD-ANG Martin State to Patuxent and COLT flight also up apparently going to Ft. Drum. (Interflight 142.3 for WARDOG...COLT probably on low band FM...mid-1000 hour U/I MD-ANG A-10 flight working interflight 140.025))
UGLY flight of A-10s from PA-ANG Willow Grove to Patuxent (Interflight 143.25)

1053: Encrypted voice comms...369.875

1408: DEVIL 11 flight of F-16s from NJ-ANG @ ACY on the way to R-5802...w/ZNY-Modena 335.6 and then ZNY-Lancaster 239.05...then heard w/ZNY-Williamsport 338.3 at 1419 where they cancel IFR.

More CAP:
1408: BOAR 41/42 on the way to the CAP...w/ZDC-Calvert...281.4
1408: BOAR 33 asks for wx at LFI confirming they're operating from Langley...228.9
1412: TANKER 11 checks in w/HUNTRESS...at FL 300 on the way in...uses 260.9.
TANKER 11 = KC-135R, 62-3576, 133rd ARS NH-ANG Pease (Female boomer)
1414: BOAR 41/42 check in w/Potomac...350.25
1417: HUNTRESS lets TANKER 10 know that TANKER 11 is about 10 minutes out with Mode 3 of 3426...228.9
1419: BOAR 41/42 check in w/HUNTRESS...228.9
1421: BOAR 41/42 heading to TANKER 10 for fuel...228.9
1428: BOAR 33/34 cleared to RTB and start back to Langley...228.9 (Handed to ZDC-Calvert 281.4 at 1435)
1434: TANKER 10 completes AR w/BOAR 41/42 and is cleared by HUNTRESS to RTB...228.9
1435: TANKER 10 cleared to Indianhead and then Pittsburgh by Potomac...135.525
1438: BOAR 41 heading to TANKER 11 for more fuel...228.9
1440: TANKER 10 handed to ZDC-Hagerstown 134.15
1450: BOAR 41 finally off the boom...pilot and boomer agreed fuel was pumping very slowly...228.9
1554: Both BOAR 41 and 42 report slow fuel pumping from TANKER 11...11 asks BOAR 42 to take a look at the fuselage to see if there are any wet spots or obvious leaks...nothing seen...228.9
1733: BOAR 42 tells TANKER 11 they're from the 390th Fighter Squadron which settles the problem I mentioned above...228.9
1756: HUNTRESS tells TANKER 11 his replacement is airborne and 1 hour, 5 minutes out...228.9 (Long shift for 11)
1818: TANKER 11 confirms they're from the 157th ARW (133rd ARS) at Pease NH...228.9
1900: TANKER 12 is in...228.9
TANKER 12 = KC-135R, 59-1498, 132nd ARS ME-ANG Bangor
1900: BOAR 31 and 32 in to replace BOAR 41/42...228.9
1903: HUNTRESS gives BOAR 41/42 a new mission --- to RTB and authenticates Mike Echo...228.9
******************************************

1500: BRUTUS (E-3, 78-0578) to Giant Killer informing him that BRUTUS wants the AIRGUN flight to come up on 292.3 when they get in the area and the MAD DOG flight to use 389.1...238.1
AIRGUN 71 flight checks in w/Giant Killer on 249.8 at 1520. MAD DOG 81 flight heard later on 389.1 as requested.
Another bunch of DC-ANG Andrews F-16s up on interflight freqs 139.15/139.35/143.6 and DEVIL 11 flight working its way back to ACY on the ZNY UHF freqs.
1526: AXEMAN flight of two A-10s returning to MTN...297.2 (Followed by a COLT flight a few minutes later)

Lots of aircraft are being moved out of the path of the tropical storm Hanna heading up the coast. Seymour Johnson reported to be moving 80 F-15s plus KC-135s to Wright Patterson. Charleston is moving C-17s to same location. Some of the Charleston C-17s and SJ KC-135s have already been noted moving in that direction.
Locals in that area have logged five C-17s and five KC-135s along with 35 F-15s that have already arrived.
A friend sent me the following tails he has logged going to Wright-Patt:
97-0041 C-17
01-0189 C-17
93-0604 C-17
97-0044 C-17
96-0005 C-17

62-3557 KC-135
62-3509 KC-135
57-1437 KC-135
62-3537 KC-135
60-0349 KC-135

Today's log has been moved to a new message below due to reaching character limits for a single message.
