Tin,

All my hard work has finally paid off!!!

))

Tony

Add to that all the nasty comments I've made over the years about that juvenile appearing "DECEE" and perhaps they finally got the word. But I doubt it.

1337: SOONER 01 Heavy (KC-135R, 58-0015, 465th ARS Tinker) on approach to the area, contacts ADW Tower for landing but is waived off due to high winds. Told Tower he'd like to hold at RATTA on 10-mile legs. A minute later he went over to CP freq 378.1 and explained about the winds and that he'd be holding. (I'm showing 37 mph winds at BWI but it sure appears and sounds greater than that. Just plugged Andrews AFB zip code into Weatherbug and it shows 29 mph gusts but they must be greater if landings are being halted.)
1407: SOONER 01 Heavy still out there flying those 10 mile legs around RATTA at 3,000 feet.
1408: SOONER 01 calling Martin State Airport Command Post...several calls, no joy...347.2

1348: REACH 946 (C-17A, 94-0070, 437th AW Charleston) calling Pope AFB CP...257.1 (This aircraft departed the U.S. on the 17th for Europe. First log of the day today was in Hungary on his return trip.)
Just for interest's sake...same station in Hungary logged SAM 3524 (C-37A, 99-0404, 99th AS Andrews) this morning at 0927Z.
1408: REACH 421T (C-17A, 99-0060, 62nd AW McChord) just reported airborne from Andrews to CP...378.1 (I didn't hear his callsign but that's what he's displaying. Might be different since that was his inbound call if his mission is completed for that USTRANSCOM mission.)
1411: RAVEN flight (A-10, MD-ANG) reports "call us off at 10" as they go airborne...347.2 (SOONER 01 still calling so I guess Ops doesn't hear him.)
1413: DC-ANG F-16 flight up on interflight (no callsign heard yet)...143.6
1415: RAVAGE flight approaching Andrews w/TRACON...270.275 (Same flight on 143.6, flight of three)
1416: COLT flight (A-10 MD-ANG) w/Harrisburg Approach...281.525 (Flight working 140.025 interflight)
1417: RAVAGE flight over to ADW Twr for landing runway 1L...349.0
1417: SOONER 01 tells Andrews CP he wants to go to BWI...378.1
1417: GILLY 1 (C-130E, 63-7879, 37th AS Ramstein AB) just off from ADW...tells Twr he's going to departure...118.4
1419: RAVAGE 3 reporting he's getting "an anti-skid light" so wants to go over to 1R with the arresting barrier (anti skid light means he might not have braking)...349.0
1425: RAVAGE flight has gone around a couple of times checking things out...still in pattern and now preparing to land...RAVAGE 3 is the one with the problem, will land on the right runway, stop on the runway and be towed off...349.0
1426: RAVAGE 3 asking for confirmation the cables are up on the right runway...confirms they are and he's going in...349.0
1427: SMASH 41 w/ZDC-Salisbury reporting at FL 240...257.7
1429: SOONER 01 Heavy to BWI Twr for landing runway 33L...cleared to land by Tower, reports gear down...119.4
1430: SOONER 01 pointed out to STAT 18 (Med helo) by tower and tower warns the KC-135 of the helo...119.4
Extremely busy on all radios...missing lots of traffic while listening to SOONER 01/BWI Tower/BWI Ground as a priority for now. (Stuck my head out the front door and saw him on approach to 33L. I get about a 5 second view in that direction)
1434: SOONER 01 w/BWI Ground...directions to taxi on Poppa, left on Bravo and over to Signature...she tells him to standby and she'll get a parking space for him ...121.9
1435: SOONER 01 gets new directions...Poppa to P1, left across runway 22...121.9
1437: SOONER 01 to go behind the Embraer and over to the Signature ramp...121.9
1437: SMASH 41 handed off to ZDC-Casino and checks in at 14,500 for 11,000...285.4
1438: BWI Ground tells SOONER 01 he'll see an MD-11 and he's to park on his right side...Block 17 is his parking spot...121.9
1440: BWI Ground tells SOONER 01 he can talk to Signature on 122.95...SOONER 01 says he's already talking to them...121.9
Signature must have a very low power transmitter since I can't hear them on 122.95 and have never heard of that freq - at least for Signature use.
I switched to the normal Signature freq 129.0 and I can hear both ends l/c...Signature asks what he needs...SOONER 01 says he needs transportation for 20 pax and 5 crew to the terminal and then they'll find a way to Andrews...says the aircraft will be there until at least tomorrow...129.0
1448: SOONER 01 says they're going to drop the ladder (and do it) and unload the crew...Signature rep tells them in no uncertain terms to pull the ladder back in. They can't drop off any crew or passenger until Signature comes out to get them. Repeats it a couple of times getting angrier sounding each time. SOONER 01 says they'll comply. Signature is going to tow the aircraft to a parking space and the aircraft commander just wants to make sure they can get out again from the spot when needed. Signature rep calls himself "ASIG" and thanks SOONER 01 for pulling the ladder back into the plane...129.0
1451: SOONER 01 asks if they can shut down their engines...ground tells them they can and wants to know the arrangements for their departure....SOONER 01 tells them they haven't gotten that far yet and just don't know the departure plans yet...129.0
1454: Signature tells SOONER 01 again to shut down their engines...also says they will have an ACU (or ATU) there shortly and "playmate" the passengers and crew to the terminal. SOONER 01 says they want to go to the Signature terminal, not the BWI terminal - which comes as a surprise to the Signature rep. So, he's off to change the arrangements he had just made for them to go to the BWI terminal....129.0 (this is getting kind of funny...they may be on that plane for a bit - with engines shut down and no air. I'd bet the commander is sorry about now that he decided on BWI for recovery of the aircraft.)
By 1503 nothing further is heard so here's where I'll leave it and go enjoy some sunshine.

Well...that was a bad idea. Went outside and about 15 seconds later got bonked on the head with a falling tree branch in the wind.
Earlier, I mentioned the Hungarian logger that had the SAM flight. He also had a couple of other locals...SAM 3590 (C-32A, 98-0002, 1st AS Andrews) at 0535Z and REACH 167 (C-5B, 87-0027, 436th AW Dover) at 0803Z today. Nice location and his log seems very busy. By the way, yesterday I was wondering if 98-0003 was really Air Force 2 since the VP usually uses the 98-0002 aircraft. It was AF2 which got confirmed when he returned to ADW last night. And now I know why he wasn't aboard his usual 98-0002 since it's in Hungary with some other VIP. Has anyone seen anything in the news about someone heading that way?

1535: E-6B, 164388, VQ-4 off from Patuxent, climbing and heading south, then turning on the usual westerly course toward Gordonsville.
1548: 164388 is about 2/3 of the way to Gordonsville, has climbed to FL 240 and leveled off...moving at 400 knots on course 275.

1604: MANTA 75 [Yesterday he was OLLA 79]...(C-32B, 02-4452, 227th SOF NJ-ANG McGuire) heading northeast through the area at FL 330. He just came up from VA, crossed into southern Delaware from MD's eastern shore - looks like he's heading back to McGuire.
1617: MANTA 75 just starting to cross the mouth of Delaware Bay - just southeast of Waterloo.

1700: Another E-6B (164386, VQ-4) coming in from the west...FL 330, 90 degree heading.

Just saw a report on another board that an OH-58C from the NTPS at Patuxent was destroyed yesterday afternoon (1500 hour) when it rolled over. BuNo is (was) 696160.

I'm too far out for much CAP mode S coverage except for occasional McGuire or other tanker help
but will make note of that.Scanner is still overall the distance champ!

Hello,

Scanner will always win out because of the lower frequency. You need to put the box's antenna as high and clear of obstructions as possible and use low-loss coax. In my experiments I was able to get aircraft up to 150 miles away in some directions and the local obstruction pattern was clearly visible when I mapped out the range versus direction. It was interesting to pick up a couple of NYC to Japan commercial flights going up the Hudson River from my QTH near Boston.

I also found using a gain antenna filled in some of the gaps. I have an airport 8 miles away over on the other side of a small hill. I could not see any ground traffic until I used a gain antenna (5/8 wave over 1/4 wave "curly" versus a 1/4 wave).

I bought a couple of used Create Log Periodic Arrays that go up to 1300 MHz. I am going to experiment with one to see what it does to the range in desired directions.

Thanks Eric for info.Let us know how your experiments work.
I use a good roof aerial 1/4 wave with good low loss cable. However topographically I'm
weak to West/Southwest towards Baltimore but fairly strong North-South and East.
I believe large hills on Eastern shore of Chesapeake knock down my reception
to the West.A theory anyway using my Polar diagram readout.
Also I'm at about 12 feet above sea level at my house so another strike.

Sightings

Guys,

Was playong golf at Upper Marlborough today. Between 0900 & 1400 saw the following:

Two Blackjack HH-65s flitting around and doing practice intercepts on each other.

VC-32A in pattern work

C-21A landing,

Couple of F-16s, two flts of two, either departing or landing at ADW

Several 1st Helo Sqdn UH-1 flying around Marlborough

One C-130 approaching ADW

I could've sworn I also saw a B-52 landing at ADW---but I only got a glimpse of it---didn't want to miss my putt. Maybe it was the Sooner guys in Tin's logs.

1720 local REACH 6168 C-17 diverting to Atlantic City due to Dover and McGuire closed cause of
BASH window to 2230z.
1755 REACH 7175 C-17 will do holding pattern til 2230z. Geese must be all over the place.

The saga of SOONER 01 (see above) comes to an end. The crew made it to BWI bright and early this morning, made their arrangements with Signature and got the hell out of there with a 0906 wheels up time. They departed as SOONER 88 after quickly programming 'SOON88' into their transponder (on the list below). I wasn't at the radios so didn't have a chance to hear Clearance Delivery to get their destination. Log below now shows them heard again at 1139 so he must have made a hop from BWI to ADW and now off again. They even fixed the callsign in their Mode-S this time to SOONR88 as it should be.

1230: DECEE 31 (ID below) 30 minutes out with a boom problem so coming home. The boom won't fly past 10 degrees right...351.2
1233: DECEE 94 (KC-135R, 61-0307, 756th ARS Andrews) to LIBERATOR reports off the ground at 1632Z...says he'll see them tomorrow...351.2
1236: DECEE 31 to LIBERATOR says approach told them the Fire Department status is degraded and can only handle an aircraft smaller than a C-17...wants to know what their actual status is...351.2

Here's my Mode-S log for 22 October: (List will be updated throughout the day)

So...I started reading the FAA's daily reports again to see if I could pick out anything interesting. I'm only about 150 days behind. :)
From 22 Oct report:
At Dulles (KIAD), they've officially added Tower freqs for the Center runway (01C/19C) of 120.25/348.6

From 20 Oct report:
At Charleston (KCHS), they've deleted 344.6 as the PMSV Metro freq and added 233.95 to replace it.
Maryland's Salisbury MacKinnis Airport is declared "Abandoned"
At Minneapolis-St. Paul Intl (KMSP) they've removed remarks to contact VIKING Ops and replaced it with a Joint Command Post on 252.1. Call ABSTAIN for 934th AW AFRC or CACTUS for 133rd AW ANG.

From 16 Oct report:
Dyess AFB deleted PMSV Metro freq 383.25 and replaced it with 339.65
I mention these PMSV freqs because of ongoing discussions about 344.6 being pulled nationwide (Andrews not gone yet) and other freqs changed to reserve certain freqs for a future unknown use. The Dyess freq was probably due to it being in the middle of the LMR band.

From 07 Oct report:
I think everyone is aware of this but they did publish the change for the Andrews Navy PTD freq from the old 251.5 to the new 362.9.

1508 local -- DECOY 99 receiving clearance to LIT, left turn out direct Linden>J134>Collins>J6 to Charleston VOR, squawk will be 0510 (believe this to be 68-0222 as he said his scheduled takeoff time was 3 hours ago and I've been hearing maintenance working on it during the morning - 121.8

Re: DECOY 99

Had him up on 297.000 w/PIKESIDE @ 1937Z. saying something about "we're off and will monitor on 676 while airborne."

Re: IAD 1C/19C tower freqs

Interesting! Current VHF freq 128.425 is still in service today so will pop these in and wait for the NOTAM. Very cool stuff Tin, thanks!

Any word on what plane Obama is flying on today? Wondering if he'll be flying into IAD or JYO.

Tony has your airport and the plane is N755NA (TYSON 8).

I'd be willing to bet they'll only use those freqs during the busiest of times when they are forced to fill another position in the tower. If one position can handle all the traffic, they'll use a single freq. At least that has been the norm at some of the other major airports where they have separate freqs for each runway. You're in the best position to hear it though Tony. I'm sure you'll let us know when you hear it in use.

Re IAD 1C/19C

Hi Tin,

They dumped single TWR freq usage at IAD many, many years ago. The E/W split freqs of 120.100/128.425 have been in operation almost constantly since that time (except maybe between 0100L-0400L when they might have a single station active - I'll stay up late this weekend and check on that as you've got me very curious now. Those used to be my regular haunting hours, I'll bet Ron will remember that! ). I would envision three TWR freqs in operation once the current 1C/19C is up after refurbishment and the new 1L/19R is in operation.

Tony

E-3 active 10/23/2008

BRUTUS BRAVO has been working HUNTRESS for at least the last 1/2 hour with tracks, etc - 260.9 Strong signal from the E-3, I'm not hearing HUNTRESS.

Brian, my log shows 82-0006 (E-3C, 552nd ACW Tinker) in the area with a front end callsign of SENTRY 06. I picked him up at 1243 and it appears to be moving to the north. It was overhead New Castle County airport about 20 minutes after I got him. That might be your guy. I'm not at my radios today so haven't had the voice transmissions to go with it.
Add: Early 1400 hour that E-3C is over Montreal.
Add: New England/New York monitors hearing BRUTUS working fighters in that area mid-1400 hour. Guess he was just flying through this area on his way north when you caught him which explains why he wasn't working aircraft in this area. He must have just been testing the datalink with HUNTRESS (on northern transmitters only) at that time which is why you didn't hear the ground transmissions.
***********************************

Ron, I've got nothing on my log that matches your '44' guy. Nothing even close. No foreign flagged aircraft near that time - at least not military types.
