Hi Tony,

Nope, not a typo. I went back and listened to the recording between 81 and 82 on 139.875.
He said 5500. 81 repeated it and 82 said, correct.

I agree with you though. It was most likely 5550 which is the normal freq for that route
but the pilot probably heard it wrong and repeated it wrong. Just a goof on their part
which I'm sure they found out eventually.

I would attach an mp3 of this but RR won't let us attach mp3 files. If you want it I can email
to you.

1405 local Also logged that Saudi AF 911 inbound Dover C-130H #1626 (71025D)
First time ever logging that one here.
An ironic callsign....

Heard, but didn't see, F-22s doing the CAP yesterday afternoon. They sound noticeably different than F-15s/16s.

Finally, saw a C-17 (west origin) turning downwind at 1710L this afternoon while strolling on the Mall. ID?

Potomac Simulcasts

I'm mystified. I drove out to Dulles and parked in a hotel parking lot across Rt. 28 from the transmit site. Got no UHF simulcast on any of the tower freqs or any of the Potomac freqs, although the VHF freqs were thundering in.

Only possibility I can see is that they're transmitting the UHF from some other location NOT co-located with the paired VHFs. Haven't run into that before with ARTCCs and other airports, but it's certainly possible. I do occasionally hear the aircraft on these UHF freqs...just never the ground station, even when I'm parked near known transmit sites.

Steve, N4TX

Hi Steve,

This is not the case at least in my recent monitoring experience. I can verify that AT LEAST PT 257.200, 270.275, 335.500, 348.725, 257.875 are all simulcast V/U.

Best regards,

Tony

Yeah the irony of that callsign got my attention.. Saudi AF 911.
Things that make you say..Hmm.

Once again you keep seeing Mississippi C-17's on Sundays.
That was C-17 #03-3118 172 AW MIss.coming in as RCH 421.

I'd imagine I'm seeing the Maryland-Mississippi part of a regular JAC-ADW-Germany and back rotation. Since I'm usually watching the same place at the same times, it's not that weird that I'd see the same piece of a schedule. Thanks for the ID.

Re: Potomac Simulcasts

Hi Steve,

The only thing I can think of is that in the Shenandoah Area at least, or perhaps TRACON-wide, V/U simul is only peak hour and the simul I'm hearing on the (mostly) Mount Vernon Area freqs and on the busier Shenandoah Area freqs is because I'm usually monitoring during those peak hours?

Tony

More often than not Dulles tower does not simulcast on UHF. I know they were simulcasting recently, I think it was Friday night. Most of the time 123.825 is simulcast on 254.25 from Dulles it sounds like. 123.825 transmits from elsewhere though and I can't hear the controller. Only occasionally do I hear the UHF freqs simulcasting.

This morning around 0900-0930 I heard DRAGO-41/42 on 279.575 preparing for a flyby at Arlington. Then I heard AF-1, SAM-93 and SPAR-10 departing to the west. At 1000 I heard a rumbling that I knew could only be mil planes, so I peaked out the window. It was the DRAGO flight, two B-1Bs leaving the area to the southwest. 317.425>257.875>322.55

so about 1430 I look up and see a jumbo jet (gray, 4 nacelles, fixed wing, huge) dipping under the clouds and circling my house! (Somerset county) 20 minutes later an AWACS flies by, east to west, and ten minutes later the jumbo, same track, presumably headed for Pax. ten minutes later I sees him again, headed to SBY.
who is this guy? Giant Killer? I've heard these guys (and others) on the scanner but don't think I've had a visual on him.

Pax River was busy today as you can see from my post just above earlier today.
GIANT KILLER is Navy callsign for air controllers who run that giant radar dish down
on the Eastern Shore Va Cape. They are in charge of 90,000 square miles of
ocean warning areas mainly for military fighter aircraft training.
Most aircraft entering warning areas offshore check in on Giant KIller controller
249.800 and then switch to Tac freqs like 312.300 Delmarva or others etc.
You may have spotted a Navy E-6B which has 4 engines.Pax river has several of them
based there.

PS: Don't forget to put out your flag for Veterans Day Weds.
