Stockton CHP Comm reception...

Hay all! First post here, but I did do a search and found a few threads started Re. reception issues with the CHP freq's. I am using a "WSMA-881 Super Gainer SMA Portable Antenna", and have to say that it works way better than my "800 MHz 2.5db Gain Professional Portable BNC Antenna" ever did, and I can actually listen to Fremont & Newark from the Elk Grove area with this antenna.

That said, the CHP frequency of 44.9200, while it comes in excellent on I 205 between Tracy Blvd and I-5 from Hwy 4 to 99, it flops all the way from 99 north, and I get nothing out of the Sac area CHP with my BR330T.

Anything I should know as far as better antennas, or location of the antenna would be appreciated. I drive a big truck BTW, so would a ducky window mount with BNC connector give better CHP reception in the areas that are bad?

CHP, being in low band, is "interesting" when you try to map out reception at various locations. One of the issues is that they transmit from several different locations on the same channel. So unless you know exactly which transmission site is being used at any moment, you can't just blanket say that reception is "..." at some location.

Low band means a "big signal", so you need a "big" antenna, one designed for low band. A "ducky" does NOT cut it. A mag mount will do better. Also, I am not happy with the reception of Unidens on any band.

i use a full length lowband antenna and dont have any problems

using a high band antenna or the antenna you describe you will lose reception about where you said -

those antennas are only good for local area chp beyond that you dont have enough antenna to capture the microvolts

hard to find but if you can.. i think this is the best scanner antenna ever made

i have that antenna with the choke - they dont make them anymore and i dont even leave the antenna on the vehicle at night it's my baby

i wish some chinese company would copy those and sell them

those work great for chp and some vhf

but i dont think they work too well on uhf or 800 do they ?

if you dont need chp coverage thats too far out

a standard high band qtr wave antenna works great on chp vhf uhf and 800

example - in sac with a high band antenna i typically can get

chp gold green and black (white is spotty truckee is spotty)

all of sac 800 system

most of vhf and uhf all around the area

so if you dont need chp thats too far away a high band antenna works just fine

the chp academy sticks on uhf antennas on the patrol cars as scanner antennas

(the guy thinks its great for uhf and 800 - it is ) but statewide uhf and 800 isnt exclusive and they lose out on high band and low band

I still use an old AS MONR31 low band antenna. Discontinued now, got to be about 40 yrs old.
Killer antenna on CHP low band, has 3 long drooping radials about 9 foot long. Great ground plane antenna. I don't think they make an antenna like this anymore. Too bad, 'cause this is what you need for optimum low band reception.

If you can afford the cost its well worth it.

I notice it's quite cheaper at a variety of other places than SM.

Half Moon Bay Police Vehicle Which Was On San Mateo Co Sheriff Low Band 45.7800mhz KMA455.
If My Memory Is Correct I Got It In A Trade Around 1974. Sometime Between 1974 & 1978 San Mateo
Co Sheriff Moved To 488.9875mhz KMA455 Again If Memory Is Correct.
