You could try listening to Zello on your computer or mobile device. Plenty of people asking for help and others volunteering:

Download - https://zello.com

Asking for help or to give help - channels:

  • Texas Search and Rescue
  • North Houston Rescue
  • South Houston Rescue
  • East Houston Rescue
  • West Houston Rescue
  • Downtown Houston Rescue

If you have a boat - channels:

  • boaterstexas
  • Mesa and Tidwell

Information i've posted - https://radioscanning.net/threads/zello-texas-search-and-rescue-houston-rescue.32/

They are looking for more volunteers to assist in taking details from those asking for help.

FOR THE PEOPLE TROLLING THE CHANNELS - PEOPLE ARE DYING AND YOU'RE BLOCKING RESCUE COMMS.

I just downloaded Zello and logged in...

I have to admit, that is an OUTSTANDING resource for people in need and volunteers to communicate in 1 central place. Walkie talkie, picture feature and live mods are very good.

Found about 4 rooms that people are communicating...

Looks like Hamsters are out of a job!

There are several ham radio Zello channels.
My point is that amateur radio is not being used for this event. No DMR, no HF etc.

Cell phone companies have done an EXCELLENT job on maintaining cell tower integrity. That's how people are getting help, besides 911. 911 communication centers have been overwhelmed from everyone calling for help, which is understandable. As of today, I am not sure what the call queue is, so I can't speak as to wait times. . So the people are finding alternate forms to summon help. I totally understand and feel for them as this can happen to any city or town.

What ham radio channels are being used in Zello for this particular event ? To my knowledge, all 4 of the Zello channels being used are your average Joe's using a means to communicate with various people through internet (obviously).

For those that don't know what Zello is used. It is an app that anyone can download to their smartphones. Quick sign up and no licenses required. You can easily listen in on to calls for help along with boaters being dispatched to areas.

You can Twitter Zello and you will see the actual channels being used. .

In addition to the smartphone app there is a Windows PC app that includes a gateway that allows you to interface a two-way radio base station to the PC (with the proper hardware) so radio users can access the newtork. You have to pay for the gateway function but I don't remember what it costs.

On paper everything looks hunky dory. That doesn't mean it's being used by any of the real players involved ie Cajun Navy, average Joe's . From what I've seen (pictures on Twitter and Google) those guys aren't using any type of radios. They are mostly using cell phones and the Zello app. I have attempted HF and DMR and I have yet to hear any vital news or updates on those platforms.

By no means am I disputing of an established comm plan for that region. What I am saying is it "seems" that hamsters have been removed from the equation. ARES and RACES are somewhere, not sure where though. Maybe home, watching it unfold on TV. I'm their own safety and comfort of home.

TX Volunteer Boat Rescues

Monitoring: I downloaded the free walkie talkie app Zello. Listening to Southeast Texas Navy volunteers working boat rescues in TX. Many other groups doing amazing work in S.E. Texas.m to monitor as well.
