Greetings-
I have a BC796D and have hooked it up through my computer and then broadcast it live via Windows Media Encoder 7. The sound is fair to poor as it sounds like they are talking in a can. The base stations sound this way while the cars sound better. I am broadcasting at 28kb/sec in a FM mono mode. Does anyone have experience with streaming audio.

I think the problem is with the mono feed into the computer which is digital and then being broadcast to a stero output on the computer.

Any thoughts?

It's probably a simple fix... Can you post the IP for a listen? Just a total guess though... If base stations are more messed up then mobile, I'm thinking the level into the comp might be too high. Digital audio has very little headroom, and it clips very easily. The stronger signals may be distorting and doing weird stuff if the level is too high. Mono/Stereo should not have any effect on the audio quality.

Andy, do you have a line in connection on the sound card connected to your computer and if so, are you using it instead of the microphone connection ? Using the mic in will make it not sound very good and there are rumors that you can damage the sound card and possibly your computer.

Also, is the patch cord you are using between your scanner and computer have a stereo plug that connects to your scanner or is it mono ? I know with mine, it doesn't sound very good using a mono plug.

If the above 2 are ok, you might try upgrading to windows media encoder 9.

Sound card, maybe - but this is earphone level with most scanners, not speaker level.

Computer, not unless you have some pretty high (as compared to audio level) voltage coming out of your scanner's phone jack.

With the Pro-95 it's exactly the opposite. It depends on the scanner.

I prefer the shoutcast Winamp encoder. My scanner sounds the same on the internet as it does on the scanner.

Thanks for the replies- I have a wedding to go to today so playing around with the scanner is out. I will try what was suggested(scandenver) and would like to know more about shoutcast(al42). Is shoutcast free? How many can listen to broadcast at one time. I know with WME -only five can sign up at one time to listen. Also- is it easy to set up.

Take care and have a great day.
**Check back on Sunday night. I will be on line messing around with the feed. I will check for your reply then.

Actually with WME, the number of listeners is only limited to the amount of bandwidth your isp provides. You can increase this number by editing the registry settings. If you want help with this, please contact me by email at scan-denver@comcast.net.

Totally. You need Winamp (which you can get from Nullsoft, shoutcast's owner). You'll also need something like NoIP if you don't have a static IP - also free.

The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to put up a picture of the display on the web site, showing the current channel being received.

Limited by your bandwidth. You set it in the config file.

Very - I did it. :)

Nullsoft maintains a web site with full instructions, and a forum if you have problems.

If you want a hostname, www.dyndns.org has an application that automatically update your ip address on their servers. I use it with dialup and it works great! The service is free by the way.
