I just bought a BCT15X for my daughter and in trying to program it I ran into a problem. I have a 396T and 996T, but have not come across this before. The BCT15X will scan Alabama as a default I guess. I used freescan to download my county program in Indiana. I selected "erase all systems and settings" as I wanted just my County programmed. After that it displays nothing to scan. I checked the lock outs and my county is not locked out. All checks normal for my county frequencies and group settings. Alabama is gone though.

I did a restore or reset and this time in uploading my county program I did not select the erase all systems and settings. Now it will scan my county and Alabama. I thought I could lockout Alabama, but it doesn't show up in programming system. My county is there though.

Any ideas how to get rid of Alabama?

Hi N9AWO,
I too am a fairly new BCT15X user (1st time using ANY scanner) and I did exactly what you did, thinking I would erase the default state being scanned and load up just my local counties but that didn't work.

I still haven't found out if you can stop that "State Scan" from scanning, I've tried a few things but none of them worked. I finally selected my home state-Vermont, and let it scan that along with the counties I programmed in.
One thing the RR Database doesn't have listed WITH my area was the Department of Transportation (DOT) frequencies and the State Police frequencies. They're located on RR by clicking other links but being a newbie user, I went the easy route and had FreeSCAN Import what was listed on my County page in the RR database and left it at that.

When I learned how to tune my scanner to Vermont, instead of Alabama, I had those two departments, DOT & State Police scanned through the Vermont default programmed in the scanner. And I hear quite a bit through the Vermont system.

The volume button will get you to your state, Indiana, if you choose to select it. Here's how;
Press the Function button then press the VOL button, then turn the Function button to scroll to your state. Once you find the state you want, press the function button to select it. It will "Process" your selection, and continue scanning, if that's what the scanner was doing before you followed my instructions above..

If you do find out how to stop the scanner from scanning a state, let me know. I'd be interested in knowing how.

I hope this helps...

Thanks for the info. I found a way to stop it. Push the HP button until the HP and BT are both gone. I am still reading through the manual, but just happened to push the HP button and the HP BT at the bottom of the readout screen changed.

N9AWO, Just a FYI, to let you know your problem with the "Erase all settings....." option on Freescan is not unique to your scanner. I have the same issue with mine. It works okay in my 996T and 396T though, so it must be some kind of an issue with the 15X.

Pushing those buttons...

Thanks for the info. I found a way to stop it. Push the HP button until the HP and BT are both gone. I am still reading through the manual, but just happened to push the HP button and the HP BT at the bottom of the readout screen changed.

I don't have the BT (BearTracker) on anyway but I do have the HP (Highway Patrol) on.
What I hear most from that button is the state police which I don't mind listening to.
I log the frequencies that show up on the display when a channel is activated and the HP flashes.
That way, eventually I'll just program those into my scanner and I can then de-activate that button.

When I first loaded my county frequencies into my scanner with FreeSCAN and tried to erase all systems and settings, when it was all loaded, nothing would scan. The display said "Nothing to scan" even after I pushed the scan/search button. I thought I'd really screwed up my scanner until I noticed none of those buttons; PL, DT, HP, BT were displayed so I just started pushing the buttons until my scanner started working-again! Once I settled done I started pushing, to remove, the ones I didn't want.
I guess I hadn't realized the HP button controlled the Vermont frequencies.

I'll play with that button eventually.
My Regards...

Black, you need to learn to set up quick keys. These are like bank switches - it tells the scanner what to scan. That's one of the most common causes of the 'Nothing to Scan' message. That message, and its various causes are covered here (once again, part of the DMA FAQ that's part of the article I gave you earlier)

Nothing to Scan - The RadioReference Wiki

This is a very common error, and one that trips a lot of folks up at first.

Yup, I'm all set there Mike. I had that problem when I first set up my scanner with FreeSCAN.
I've had the chance to review what that did and l set up quick keys on my conventional systems and my trunked systems.
I find I use the quick keys to turn off the trunked systems after working hours, they usually go quiet then and it speeds up scanning in my conventional systems.
