Well, I finally gave up trying to shoehorn my new 796D ScannerMaster Remote Head into the dash, and went with a RAM mount off the shifter console. I'm not much good with a Dremel tool, and my wife was even less keen on the idea. On the upside, the install with the RAM mount took all of 15 minutes, and is infinitely more adjustable. On the downside, I really wanted an in-dash install--they just look cool...

I'm finally using my cassette player, though--you can probably see the not-too-subtly-routed wire. I get great audio from the RadShack CD to Cassette adapter. The main body of the radio is back in the hatchback, in the storage tray, just above the spare tire.

TinEar: If that display looks familiar, it's because I used your "firsttry.mem" file to get started. Thanks for posting it, Al--it came in very handy.

Looks like a good install! I know that sometimes pedestal mounts can not look as "sleek" as an in-dash job, but I think this one came out well!

New ProClip Mounting

In the "why can't I just leave it alone" department... Despite several kind and encouraging comments from people in this forum, I was never quite satisfied with the RAM mount that I'd initially installed. It was too wobbly, and was always in the way whenever I had a passenger. I saw that someone--although I can't recall where--had used a ProClip mount to secure their handheld, and I knew there had to be a way to do the same for the remote head. I'm much happier with this mount.

ProClip install

Do you have any pictures of the mount installation?

Mark-

Sorry, I didn't take photos while I was doing the job--but here's the link--you'll get the idea pretty quickly:

http://www.proclipusa.com/mountingoptions/mountingaccessories.aspx

The parts I used are all on that page:
830525 - Adjustable Console Mount with Tilt Swivel
213053 - Horizontal Extension Plate

Let me know if you have any specific questions--it was a pretty simple install--even for me.

Clip type mount

Thank you so much for the link.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I've been struggling with on finding a better mount.

I use a 785 Uniden.

In your opinion, how would that clip mount perform in supporting the 3 pounds or so that a 785 weighs??

I was so impressed, I just posted the link you referenced on ScanAtlanta.com webring.

Best Regards,
Julian

ProClip Mount

Julian-

I think that a properly installed ProClip mount would be fine with a 3 lb or so radio. The one I have has the swivel option--that can be tightened by a screw if it ever loosens up. Overall, I'm impressed with the product: it's inexpensive, easy to install, and comes with adaquate installation instructions. If you're looking at mounting your 785 with the two pieces I used: the tilt swivel mount and the horizontal extension plate--you might consider attaching your extension plate to the center of the swivel mount instead of the way I attached mine--at the end of the extenson plate. That would give you a more stable platform for a heavier radio. Good luck.

Finally got my in-dash install...

It only took two years, and three install interations, and along the way, I even switched from a Remote Head BC796D to a PRO-2096. At long last, my in-dash install is complete.

If you look at the earlier photos in this thread you can see the changes from RAM mount--always in the passenger's way; to ProClip Mount--better, but still in the way at times; to the final switch to ripping out the console storage pocket, and doing the in-dash install. My patron saint for this last install: Our lady of perpetual motion--the dremel tool. I even had room for my ProClip mount for my Blackberry. Sorry about the glare, and the second rate photos...

To complete the install, I ran a small speaker that fits quite perfectly below the forbidden ashtray, and is quite loud. To get "clean" power from the cigarette lighter, I ran the plug into a power inverter under the passenger seat. From there I plugged in the AC/DC charger that came with the PRO-2096, and then I plugged that cable into the radio. No whine or engine noise whatsoever...

See you in two years.

K9RZZ-

The hardest thing is getting started... the actual job wasn't so hard--once I figured out how to remove the plastic "wood" trim. I have a step-by-step removal procedure--I'll be happy to post it or PM it to you. Once I read it, the job was easy--a couple of "hidden" screws where I never expected them were holding me up.

Good luck!

Pedestal mounts have advantages and disadvantages. That one looks good, especially the second series of pics. I prefer better control over the radios thus, pedestal or rack systems off the side or mounted from the floor give me better radio access than in-dash mounting. Looks great.
