Hi All,
Any updates as to when Suffolk police will be fully switching over to phase II P25? I know some TG’s have already been moved over. I heard some digital audio on Surveillance TG on my RadioShack pro-18 scanner but didn’t think that my pro-18 could pick up digital audio but I guess I was wrong. Was just curious to see if anyone had any updates as to when my phase 1 scanner will stop working:(

I believe by the end of 2021 everything should be fully switched over to site 4 which is only p25 phase 1 at this time. site 3 is the only site with phase 2 traffic and its very rare there's traffic at this time. i believe site 3 is going to be used for fire departments that want to move their dispatch to the county system.

So you think I’m good to listen for a while with my phase 1 scanner?

It all depends on your location. I have not had good results trying to listen to site 4 with a 996xt while mobile and a 996p2 at home. However my unication g5 is awesome, and the sds 200 setup at home is pretty good but not as good as the g5. I am not familiar with the radioshack/whistler line of scanners. If the pro-18 specs list p25 phase 1 then you theoretically should be able to listen to site 4 but you may have issues doing so due to the system being a simulcast system.

I’m not trying to listen to the P25 system I’m just trying to listen to the regular smart zone system. I want to know how much longer I will be able to listen to the old system

depending on what your listening to figure sometime before then end of 2021. it really depends on the county radio shop and how fast or slow they migrate the users to the digital system.

So how much of this system has already switched over to the P25? Seems like its been a slow migration over to it.

That’s kinda what I am trying to figure out. It seems like they have been phase 2 capable for so long and people have been saying that they are going to switch over soon for a long time and it hasn’t really happened that much so I guess there is no real proof of what the plan is.

Why do you think it will be by the end of 2021 did you hear that from someone else?

Ah gotcha. That’s what it seems from my little research as well. How much is even on the P25 system in the first place? Or is it still primarily on the Type II system?

the only full time users of the digital system are the various transit talk groups, they are not on the moto type 2 system at all. most of the pd, medcom, and fres talkgroups have users that have new radios and are on the digital system and users that still have not gotten new radios and therefore are still on the moto type 2 system. all of the scpd precincts, medcom east/west hospital north/south sheriffs & state pd troop L seem to be patched to the digital system full time, the suny stony brook, suffolk community college ps, and your various town village users appear to be part time aka only when a user has a new radio and affiliates to the digital system. as far as the time line, thats what i've herd.

So you’re saying that most of the police have the new radios (I’m assuming APX) but there are still some police who don’t have the new digital radios they have the old radios (XTS5000) therefore the system cannot be switched to the new digital system because not everyone has the APX radios yet? This sounds true but when I see police officers is looks like most of them still have XTS model radios.

Your Pro-18 cannot do P25 Phase II unless you send it to Whistler for their "Legacy Upgrade". That updates the scanner to the equivalent of a WS1080, and adds Phase II as well as DMR.

Even with the upgrade, the Pro-18 will not do well in a dense simulcast area.

not many police vehicles/ officers have the new apx radios. thats why the talkgroups are active on the moto type 2 and p25 systems. if i would have to guess which talk groups would be next to leave the moto type 2 system i would guess the medcom talkgroups. I see alot of ems agencies are operating on the p25 system, and i think the only hospital that still needs an apx radio is long island community hospital. All it takes is for 1 new radio to be affiliated on the p25 system for the talkgroup to be patched to the p25 system from the moto type 2 system. Also now that there is more channels on the p25 system the sys admin could have made the pd talkgroups full time regardless of if a radio is affiliated with the p25 system. If your able to see radio ids on your scanner look for radio id 65520, if you see that radio id that means the user is transmitting on the p25 system
