I have been using the same 2 RTL-SDR dongles for years now and I want to upgrade to a better quality one. I use it mainly for general scanning on an 800 mhz trunk system and I like to use the "scan" function in DSDPlus to listen to and find new DMR and NXDN freqs. I use both SDS Plus and SDR Trunk but I find the audio quality on SDR Trunk MUCH better. Anyway I am not sure what I want to get. I dont want to listen to HF, just the systems I have been listening to. I want something a little more robust I can take to work and run off a tablet or small laptop.
Hot take but there's nothing wrong with what you have for what you are doing. Sure an Airspy/Hydra will have more bandwidth and better dynamic range. But you might not see much improvement over how things are now.
Buy a newer RTL-SDR Blog/Nooelec dongle and deal with driver and software compatibility because of the built-in HF upconverter you won't use.
Buy an SDRplay if you like supporting an awful company that targets end users when their products go missing and who couldn't figure out how to make the hardware do full frequency coverage when they first came out.
If you really just want to blow some money, maybe get an Airspy mini and see what you think. I have an R2 and it's a great unit but may be more than you need for your application.
I last bought a USB-C version Blog v3 and it does a fine job.
