I think this has been going on for a few months now, at least it has been effecting my area for that long. Cell phones dropping calls in places that don't usually get drops, EMS and police radios with really bad reception in places that previously had good reception, etc...

SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids

Is a page anyone interested in Radio should read every day, particularly if you listen or transmitt on the high frequencies. This latest one appears to have either missed the Earth or to have been to weak to detect once it got here.

In 1859 a solar storm occurred which, it it happened today, would wipe out most of the satellites in orbit along with complete disruption of most radio communication on the planet. And if it happened once it will happen again, eventually.

See A Super Solar Flare - NASA Science for details.

These events seem to occur about every 500 years but that doesn't guarantee we won't have one any old time.
