Super Storm Ducting

I'v been listening lately. Seems the Mid-west storms have been sturing up some serious ducting.

I have been Hearing agencies like DPS on the Mobile Input talking to the Dispatcher on the Primary Repeater. it's odd, Two Radio's sure help.

This morning I was listening to Jacksonville Fire talking to Mother of Francis Helicopter. on 153.8900 and 154.3850. then this evening I was listening to the Control Channel on Trunker out of Tulsa OK.

On AM I am hearing Aircraft as far out as Kansas City MO. and Starnet has been comming in Remarkably Well too.

Tonight I moved the 2067 indoors to capture some Tone Code's. and Wow, Are they comming in. TDCJ 153.9050 is busy, Rusk talking to Boyd Unit in Fairfield. and DPS Inter-City Mobile Traffic from God knows where.

I am wondering if this is from the super-cell systems moving through the Central and Mid-west states, or from the Solar Flares that have been happening all week? Anyways, it's nice. I have new antenna restrictions here in Sherman. so I am using the Older R/S mag mount All Band Scanner antenna tossed out on My Patio railing at my apartment on the West Side of Sherman.

Anyways, I was just looking for some input as to why this ducting is so strong, North Texas dosn't see this till like September or October.

Troposheric ducting is caused by temperature inversions or a sharp
change in the temperature/humidity gradient with altitude
Solar flares or sunspots have nothing to do with it.

Speaking of wierd and weather related... pre season tropical storm out on the pacific side is affecting weather conditions in TX, LA, MS. I started getting some interesting traffic late last night,.. still searching to find who I was monitoring but it sounded like TX, and possibly OK.

Are you sure that the aircraft was in or about Kansas City? Did you hear both sides of the converstation?

Here is why I asked those questions .. the Kansas City Center's (ARTCC) airspace covers a huge area to just north of OKC.

It would seem more likely that you were hearing an aircraft around OKC talking to KC Center. The formula for figuring out how high an aircraft needs to be for air to ground comms is:

Range [in miles] = 1.23 * sqrt (height [in feet])

Assuming the aircraft is climbing out of OKC at 25,000 feet, we get a range of 194.4 miles. More than enough to hit Sherman, TX.

Crayon, That makes alot of Sence, No, I was just hearing the Aircraft. if the ARTCC has that much coverage, then That makes alot of sence, I thought I was on to Something there....Wahh!

I am sorta wondering though Why last Night In Dallas, Over 635/75 an AWACS Aircraft was flying around low enough to see the Tail markings?

And the previous afternoon in Garland a pair of FA-18 flew over head with Full afterburners on ( Jupiter/Buckingham)

And this morning while driving from Mckinney to Bonham along SH-78 3 USMC Green Giant Helos came hopping along on an east - west pattern....

Odd! I wonder if it has something to do with Memorial Day!

Oh, Lastly, ND5Y I do know what tropo-Ducting is, TY. Just Texas don't normally see it till late Fall!

Answer: Terrorist Alert Level is elevated for this summer due to data of possible magor incident. Many big events are happening, and all the agencies, including military are increasing all activities, including training exercises. Not to mention that there is a lot of shifting of equipment going on in relation to new deployments to middle east, and the training in regards to that. If you can monitor mil air, take a listen and see what you can hear.
